WASHINGTON, July 1 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Bidenon Monday criticized the Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity that was seen as a win for his election rival, former President Donald Trump, calling it a dangerous precedent that did a disservice to the American people. In calm, measured remarks from the White House, Biden said the decision meant Trump was highly unlikely to go on trial before the Nov. 5 election for his role in seeking to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
The U.S. Supreme Court found on Monday that Trump cannot be prosecuted for any actions that were within his constitutional powers as president, but can be for private acts, in a landmark ruling recognizing for the first time any form of presidential immunity from prosecution.
"This nation was founded on the principle that there are no kings in America. Each, each of us is equal before the law. No one, no one is above the law. Not even the president of the United States," Biden said.
With the decision on Monday, he said, "that fundamentally changed." Biden is running for re-election against Trump and has been sharply critical of his rival's actions related to the Jan. 6, 2021, raid on the U.S. Capitol by Trump's supporters, who believed Trump's false claims that he had won the 2020 election.
"Now the man who sent that mob to the U.S. Capitol is facing potential criminal conviction for what happened that day. The American people deserve to have an answer in the courts before the upcoming election," Biden said, referring to Trump being on trial for his role in spurring the riot.

(5,756 posts)so the 'doers of the deed' will still be subject to prosecution. So unless the ultimate Team Blue Benevolent Dictator fantasy as seen here on DU where President Biden starts 'busting caps' himself any of his actions will be subject to amazingly quick Federal Court injunction from R lawyers that seem to have their fav judges on speed-dial.

(654 posts)That he would FINALLY support increasing the number of Justices on the Supreme Court....which would have avoided this disaster in the first place.
Its one thing to step off the train tracks and avoid being run over......its a whole other thing to stand there staring at the on coming train knowing the train is coming and let it run you over and over and over and.....
Now back to our national suicide watch......

(654 posts)It is the job of the President to lead in matters like this. Silence won't get it done and excuses about "enough votes" won't either..
We NEED strong determined leaders who will fight tooth and nail for their voters. I'm not seeing that and it pisses me effing off.
We're watching this country get destroyed by corrupt judges, weak kneed politicians, biased media, greedy corporations etc. and not much is being done about it. Excuses don't cut it. Action does. Not seeing much action from those who should be fighting for us. All we can do is vote. Once that is done its up to our elected representatives to implement the action needed.
Now sit back and watch more weak judges let a guilty Trump off the hook.

I am really hoping that Biden uses this new ability. He has a choice, and our future is as much now in his hands as in ours in November. He has the power to remove this threat, even if he chooses to simply put him in jail and cut him off from his violent cult members. Trump is a cancer that must be excised before it spreads throughout the entire country and kills it.
