Another House Democrat calls on Biden to withdraw from race

Source: CNN

Democratic Rep. Raúl Grijalva of Arizona has become the second sitting Democrat in Congress to call on President Joe Biden to drop out of the presidential race, according to an interview with The New York Times.

“If he’s the candidate, I’m going to support him, but I think that this is an opportunity to look elsewhere,” Grijalva told the Times. “What he needs to do is shoulder the responsibility for keeping that seat — and part of that responsibility is to get out of this race.”

Grijalva joins Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas as just one of two elected Democrats on Capitol Hill to call for Biden to step down from the ticket.

Most state election codes were written in the 1980's or even more recently.

Having a 1968 style open convention is not consistent with modern election codes. Current election codes support the primary election of the presidential nominee. If Biden withdraws or dies after August 22 in Texas, the electors will elect the VP.

Texas must submit a ballot change by August 22. However, I'm sure other states have different deadlines.

Sec. 192.062. PRESIDENTIAL OR VICE-PRESIDENTIAL PARTY NOMINEE. (a) The secretary of state shall certify in writing the name of a political party's replacement nominee for president or vice-president of the United States as follows:

(1) for placement on the ballot for an original nominee who withdraws, dies, or is declared ineligible on or before the 74th day before presidential election day if the party's state chair delivers certification of the replacement nominee's name, signed by the state chair, to the secretary of state not later than 5 p.m. of the 71st day before presidential election day; or

(2) to the nominating party's presidential elector candidates for an original nominee who withdraws, dies, or is declared ineligible after the 74th day before presidential election day if the party's state chair delivers certification of the replacement nominee's name, signed by the state chair, to the secretary of state not later than 2 p.m. on the Monday after the second Wednesday in December of a presidential election year.

These are knee-jerk reactions that are just creating chaos.

It is inexcusable to entertain talk of removing Biden from the ticket without addressing that, especially in light of the time it takes to resolve legal challenges and the ugly reality that there's a closely divided Senate and a Republican-led House. The 2000 presidential election will look like a Sunday school picnic next to what we know the right wing generally and Republicans specifically are capable of.
