United Airlines flight loses wheel after takeoff from Los Angeles and lands safely in Denver

Updated 7:34 PM CDT, July 8, 2024

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A United Airlines Boeing jet lost a main landing gear wheel Monday while taking off from Los Angeles and later landed safely in Denver, the airline said.

There were no reported injuries on the ground or on board Flight 1001, United said in a statement.

“The wheel has been recovered in Los Angeles, and we are investigating what caused this event,” the statement said.

The Boeing 757-200 was carrying 174 passengers and 7 crewmembers.

On March 7, a United Boeing B777-200 jet lost a tire mid-air after takeoff from San Francisco. It landed on a car in an airport employee parking lot. Nobody was hurt.

But really- NOT the manufacturer of a 30-year old plane. Seriously- if a tire falls off your 30-year old Toyota going down the freeway, do you look to Toyota for the blame? Or do you look to the mechanic who last serviced your tires?

In this case, I read that that issue here and earlier this year are both a bearing failure on the tire itself, which - if true- would mean neither the manufacturer (Boeing) nor the owner/ maintainer of the plane (United) are to blame but rather the tire manufacturer since the tires and wheels come pre-assembled from the manufacturer with no way for the mechanics at United to know there was an issue and of course Boeing has nothing to do with maintenance so they are not even in the equation.

It is simply amazing to see the lack of critical thinking that the media and talking empty heads are counting on.

Sure, Boeing has made a mess of things. But this one as well as others is not Boeing’s fault.

Aircraft wheels do fail from time to time, but the vast majority of problems like this are caused by mistakes made by maintainers while changing out a wheel with a worn out tire.

I also remember the had to fly around for hours to burn off fuel due to the lack of a fuel dump system.

We flew them last October roundtrip from PSP to EWR through DEN. 3 of our 4 flights were delayed due to mechanical issues. One delay was so long we missed our connecting flight in DEN which then required us to overnight in DEN. At least they paid for the hotel and gave us some meal vouchers. That trip certainly soured me on UAL and I used to be an elite member of their FF program when I fly a lot for my job years ago. They've gone way down hill since them. Unfortanately for the US flying public, AA and Delta also suck.

They permanently lost me as a customer last month. Southwest is the only one I'll fly now. Best was Alaska Airlines back in the 70s but those were 727s. Maybe it's just the 737 that makes flying suck, much like the Trabant did for driving.

757’s are an older jet— United is responsible for the maintenance. However, airlines have outsourced their maintenance operations for the cheaper solution, so this is what happens.

There will undoubtedly be a root cause analysis to determine why the wheel fell off, and I certainly doubt it had anything to do with Boeing.

Getting let off of responsibility with the financial equivalent of a slap on the wrist for killing 346 passengers in 2 crashes because of fraud means this shit is only going to happen more and probably start happening with more brands of planes.
