MILWAUKEE While Republican delegates gathered on the floor of the Fiserv Forum on Monday for the first day of the RNC, progressive activists were assembling outside. With handmade signs decrying the racist and reactionary Republican agenda, demonstrators took to the streets to try and shout their message across the U.S. Secret Service blockades and fences surrounding the official RNC venues.
Its hot, but Im glad were here, says Lisa Taylor, who marched along with other members of the Progressive Labor Party.
Organizers predicted more than 5,000 people from around the U.S. would participate in the show of solidarity against Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee. The crowd that turned out for the march in hot and muggy downtown Milwaukee ended up much smaller than that, although a vast range of causes and issues were represented.
Trump is what we get for our lack of participation, worried Nadine Seiler, who traveled from Waldorf, Md., to stand under the hot sun with a colorful homemade banner and bright-blue eyeliner.

(15,720 posts)Yes it's a very active protest, with a hundred organizations taking part. But I don't think CNN will be covering it ...
Think. Again.
(22,456 posts)...a headline that tries to connect peaceful protests to the "security barrier" situation of the shooting last week.

(15,720 posts)There were several protests and at least one march that got as far as the barrier. The security barrier is real. Not sure where it is, but probably many blocks from the convention. SOP since whenever.
Don't overthink the question.

Protesters carried signs in support of Palestine, abortion rights, immigrant rights, and more.

(22,456 posts)...that's not a big deal and certainly not worthy of a headline or article.
My post was about how the headline tries to play on the public fear about how an extremely dangerous armed gunman was able to kill despite the "security barrier" and it tries to create a false impression that these peaceful protests must then also be dangerous.

(15,720 posts)Protesters lost that fight:
Protest organizers lost that lawsuit, but reached a handshake agreement with the city to allow the march closer to the conventions Fiserv Forum. But after all that, demonstrators say Republican delegates arent really the audience they need to reach.
It comes at the end of the article which is organized in reverse chronology so the first part wind up last. But the title is accurate.

(22,456 posts)....should be a quick synopsis of the story then, like a headline.

(15,720 posts)Frankly I haven't heard the term applied to anything else including Saturday's shooting. At first they were called "cordons sanitaires" but security barrier is actually more accurate.

(22,456 posts)...is the obvious attempt by the headine to paint the peaceful protests as being as dangerous as the shooter.

(22,456 posts)No other choice really.
But perhaps you should consider trying not to be everyone "but me", or at least not speaking for them.

(15,720 posts)There's nothing wrong with this headline, and there's nothing suggestive about using "security barrier" in a news story about a security barrier. And I have yet to hear that term applied to the Saturday shooting. There was no security barrier at the Trump rally that I am aware of. It was a private event under the protection of the Secret Service and assorted local jurisdictions. Somehow they screwed up. Nothing whatever to do with this story.
