Federal abortion ban eliminated from Republican party platform

For the first time in 40 years, a federal abortion ban has been eliminated from the Republican Party's platform.
The 16-page document removes calls for constitutional changes banning abortion nationwide but still protects the life of a fetus. The platform supports former president Donald Trump's political position of leaving each state to render its own laws.
The platform states in part, "We believe that the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States guarantees that no person can be denied life or liberty without due process, and that the states are, therefore, free to pass laws protecting those rights."
It's a significant move for a party that worked for decades to overturn Roe v. Wade.

(4,390 posts)The fact that the Rs are pushing fetal personhood is the reason they removed it. Once fetal personhood is the rule of law, and this is the law they are pushing for, abortion will be outlawed defacto.

(5,961 posts)Trump has said as much. But Vance will be out there touting a national ban to the evangelicals, and business leaders are coming to support abortion and birth control restrictions or bans as an expedient to raise the historically low birthrate.

(3,137 posts)If youre a regular reader, you know Ive been tracking how anti-abortion activists and lawmakers are increasingly defining late abortion as anything after the first trimester. And because late abortion isnt a real medical term, they can define and redefine it at will.
Its not difficult to see how this translates to the GOPs new platform, which promises to oppose Late Term Abortion. In combination with the language about constitutional protections for fetuses, its reasonable to read the platform as a vow to push for a national ban on late abortionagain, which the GOP can define however theyd like.
In other words, despite media claims that Republicans removed support for a national ban in platform, Id argue that they very much did not. The language is vague and obfuscates, yes. But thats deliberate. Its also why Trumps campaign and conservative activists worked so hard to play the media before this new platform was released.
