Speaker Johnson calls on Biden to resign after the president announces he won't seek reelection

Source: cnn

By Clare Foran and Morgan Rimmer Updated 5:54 PM EDT, Sun July 21, 2024

House Speaker Mike Johnson called on President Joe Biden to resign “immediately” in the wake of Biden’s announcement that he will not seek reelection.

“If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President. He must resign the office immediately,” Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, said in a statement Sunday afternoon.

..............................
“Having invalidated the votes of more than 14 million Americans who selected Joe Biden to be the Democrat nominee for president, the self-proclaimed ‘party of democracy’ has proven exactly the opposite,” Johnson said.

.............. GOP Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina said that she plans to introduce a resolution on Monday that calls on Harris to invoke the 25th Amendment and assume Biden’s duties.

“If Joe Biden does not have the cognitive ability to seek reelection, he does not have the cognitive ability to serve the remainder of his term,” she said. ..............

Here we go again1

Speaker Mike Johnson
@SpeakerJohnson
At this unprecedented juncture in American history, we must be clear about what just happened. The Democrat Party forced the Democrat nominee off the ballot, just over 100 days before the election.

Having invalidated the votes of more than 14 million Americans who selected Joe Biden to be the Democrat nominee for president, the self-proclaimed ‘party of democracy’ has proven exactly the opposite.

The party’s prospects are no better now with Vice President Kamala Harris, who co-owns the disastrous policy failures of the Biden Administration. As second in command and a completely inept border czar, Harris has been a gleeful accomplice — not only in the destruction of American sovereignty, security, and prosperity, but also in the largest political coverup in U.S. history. She has known for as long as anyone of his incapacity to serve.

Regardless of the chaos in the current White House, our adversaries around the globe should be reminded that the U.S. Congress, the U.S. military, and the American people are fully prepared and committed to defend our interests both at home and abroad.

If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President. He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough.

be a simple majority of both the House (rough,) *and* the Senate (possibly weird with the current makeup....as in, could Harris still cast a tiebreaker vote?)

Absent that problem, I actually think it would help her to be POTUS for a few months before the election, not hinder her.

A: She gets more exposure and maybe some quick OJT.

B: Folks get more used to her in the role.

C: Those folks who are all "OMG, she is horrible, a disaster, we can't have a woman in that job (and you know there are some,) etc.!" get a chance to either moderate their views, or if not, at least have those who listen to them maybe chill out.

The GOP is the dog who caught the car it was chasing. And now they're trying to get the car going again because they really didn't have a plan for what to do after they caught the car.

We have a Dem VP to break ties in the Senate.

We have a Dem VP to do what Mike Pence almost didn't do.

And if Biden resigns and Harris becomes president, who would she need to confirm her choice as the new Dem VP? A majority vote of both houses of congress, is who. How exactly do you think that shit-show would go? Smoothly? Neither of us thinks that. And Mike Johnson is daytime wet-dreaming right now, hoping for that precise set of circumstances.

Then all of TFG's #47 merch would be worthless.
They would have to scramble and spend $$$,$$$,$$$ to make all new #48 merch.
They would have to scramble and spend $$$,$$$,$$$ to update ads, billboards, etc. for #48.

I didn't want Joe to step down in the first place and I certainly don't want him to resign. That would put old "Moses" Johnson here one step closer in the line of succession. But it would be funny as hell to see MAGA come to that realization.

By that logic, anyone running for a second term should not be President because they can't run for a third term, and therefore shouldn't run for a second term. And, if I'm analyzing this correctly (and correct me if I'm wrong), if said person shouldn't run for a second term then they also shouldn't run for a first term, because the logic is recursive (at least that's how I see it - once again, correct me if I'm wrong).

And speaking of "fitness", I would posit that every Republican lacks the fitness to hold any office because they follow the edicts of a man that doesn't hold elected office in the U.S. government, is a convicted felon, and attempted to overthrow the government.

I’ll ask why didn’t tfg resign after he lost the 2020 election. The people’s votes made it clear they didn’t want him in the WH. To me that has a lot more validity than President Biden deciding to step down from the election.

Invalidating 14 million votes is if Biden resigns! Our vote for the presidency is for the 4 yr term. We haven’t voted for this upcoming term yet. This isn’t even a good spin. It’s so low level like Mike Johnson.
