Netanyahu Says Settlements to Be Israeli in Merkel Clash

Source: Bloomberg

By Patrick Donahue - Dec 6, 2012 9:17 AM ET

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said expanded West Bank settlements near Jerusalem will eventually become part of Israel as he clashed with German Chancellor Angela Merkel over the prospective housing plan.
The West Bank land where Netanyahu gave preliminary approval for building 3,000 new homes last week, sparking a wave of international criticism, is a “small corridor” between Jerusalem and a major settlement bloc, Netanyahu said today after meeting with the German leader in Berlin.
“The curious thing is that most governments” that have looked at the settlement activity, “including the Palestinians themselves, as revealed in leaked documents, understand that these blocs, these arrangements, are going to be part of Israel in a final political settlement of peace,” Netanyahu said.
The Israeli leader signaled he wouldn’t back away from the expansion plans, which threaten to split a future Palestine and cut off Palestinians from their desired capital of east Jerusalem. Merkel, who said that Israel’s security is part of Germany’s “reason of state” seven decades after the Holocaust, said the two disagreed over the settlement issue.

The final peace settlement may very well assign those areas to Israel.

They have to negotiate. The sooner the better.

If Palestine has not agreed to specific borders, how can they claim any land at all.

Mexico could claim all of Southern California. They could refer to San Diego, Los Angeles and the rest as illegal settlements.

Sorry. If Palestine wants to object to Israelis being in certain places, they need to negotiate definite borders. One people can't just claim to own land if another group of people is using it. Goes both ways. Borders have to be negotiated. Peace treaties have to be signed an enforced.

nothing to negotiate. The Israelis figure that as long as the wall and iron dome prevent attacks inside Israel, there's no real problem in need of solving.

The US has agreed to a two-state solution. I don't think Israel has a choice. It is Palestine that has the choice. It is Palestine that doesn't move toward peace with a two-state solution. It is totally illogical to think that Israel would refuse to agree to safe borders for itself under an enforceable agreement with Palestinians.

Israelis in negotiations. There are virtually no terrorist attacks inside Israel any more. Israel has full spectrum dominance over the land, air, and most importantly ground water. They have the US government offering its unconditional support and loyalty.

The Israelis play along with the two-state charade for p.r. purposes--mainly to appease their trading partners in the EU.

Israel has everything it wants. Resolving the Palestinian conflict is barely an issue there--just not worth the trouble to them.

The US serves Israel.

That's the way our domestic political situation is. No getting around it.

Netanyahu just said the equivalent of "we need breathing room" and does not sense the irony in that claim at all.
