Olympic chiefs 'sorry' opening ceremony caused offence

Source: BBC

Olympic Games organisers have said they are "sorry" that scenes in Friday's opening ceremony caused offence.

A banquet sequence featuring drag artists in particular came in for criticism from Christian groups, who felt it parodied Leonardo da Vinci's painting 'The Last Supper'.

That famous 15th Century work depicts a key biblical scene.

The Catholic Church in France was among critics, saying the ceremony featured "scenes of derision and mockery of Christianity".

It’s so much easier being an atheist. I don’t have to do anything and I don’t have to suspend reality to “believe” Iron Age mythology.

Plus, I’m not offended if someone tries to mock my lack of faith. I really don’t care..

- Sorry, I seemed to have lost it a bit there, you know, my tipping point went a little haywire. These “christains” just ruin everything.

Remind them that someone is always going to be offended and today is their turn, so get over it, it will be someone else's turn tomorrow and they can be smug and self-satisfied then if they just STFU today.

They were channeling the ancient Greeks in the theme of their invention of the Olympics. It had nothing to do with the Last Supper.

It looked like the "last supper" to me, and I believe they didn't provide any context or description. I'm not sure if it was their intention to look that way.

Looked Last Supper to me too. That aside, I found it low class and cringe-worthy. Was hoping for something more artistic and elevated. It was so interesting I went and did laundry.

the Islamists, who are upset at any mention of, depiction of, or scenario including Mohammed. I think they want to "out religion" the Islamist religion (as opposed to the Islamic religion). Fanatics gotta fanatic, you know... no one can be better than them at their outrage. Just look at how they're mimicking and even going beyond what the Taliban and Wahhabi's believe and how they over react to everything!

...I would venture to say those that are upset at the opening ceremonies do NOT have any sincerely held beliefs about Christianity, because they don't even understand it, and they don't practice it. Shallowly-held beliefs, and a very shallow education to boot.

I loved the Marie Antoinette scene, headless but singing. And then they switch to some heavy metal, and then the blood-red streamers.

un spectacle formidable! Vive la France!

It only proves to the rest of us how idiotically shameful they are.
They say that they are offended by art?
Well I am offended by their treatment of people by police
I am offended by the way they say that they are pro life, yet will not adopt children
I am offended at them wanting everyone to abide by their religion’s rules
I am offended by their leaders who sat that they want everyone to abide by their religion’s rules, except themselves.
I am offended by their leader being for freedom, yet stating that he would be a dictator.
I am offended that I have just gotten started with this rant, and have to stop here.
I hope you get my point.

Expect some exceptional dramatics!

I wasn't fond of the format but after the fact applaud them for trying something different and theatrical.

Not everyone can put on a 1,000 man presentation of mind bending synchronization

lemme guess, the Karens and snowflakes are the "fuck your feelings" Christian types?

But at least when I watched the repeat on the West Coast, I didn't see that portion.

All I saw was the tableau of drag queens on either side of the DJ - who had a halo.

Did anyone else see the blue Satyr? supposedly they sang.
