Kamala Harris allies deploy new Trump attack line: he is 'just plain weird'

US Democrats have spent recent days trying out a relatively new attack line on Donald Trump: that he is weird. The tactic is almost certainly calibrated to resonate with young and independent voters who, polls show, are moving from marked disinterest in the now-dropped matchup between Joe Biden and his presidential predecessor to engagement in the 100-day contest between Trump and Kamala Harris.
In a press release Thursday, vice-president and presumptive Democratic nominee Kamala Harris issued a list of the main takeaways of what Trump had given the American people. Is Donald Trump OK? the X message said. The seventh of nine entries was: Trump is old and quite weird?
At a fundraising event in Massachusetts on Saturday, Harris tried out the line again, describing what Trump and running mate JD Vance had been saying about her as just plain weird. I mean thats the box you put that in, Harris said after Trump had called her a bum the previous day and Vance disparaged her in 2021 as a childless cat (lady).
The Harris campaign, working to redefine the race with particular attention to the youth vote, including colorizing online HarrisHQ banners lime green after Charli xcxs brat endorsement, has sought to draw attention to Trumps rally storytelling. Particularly, they have highlighted his frequent but references to fictional serial killer Hannibal Lecter of Silence of the Lambs fame as well as the choice between being shocked by a sinking electric boat or being eaten by a shark. But weird is what seems to be sticking, in part as an apparent simplification of warnings about the threat to democracy that Trump poses which dominated 15 months of Bidens re-election campaign.

Using "creepy" or "weird" or "odd", suddenly compresses the media-fed GOP crazy-world into a distinct bubble that is now labeled as being outside of societal norms, and the rest of us are merely observers, pointing and commenting on the strange behavior going on within that bubble.

(36,631 posts)Of course the entire GOP is weird, creepy, and dangerous, but dangerous has been "normalized" as you say.
An objective look at what they espouse leads one to conclude they are weird and creepy and should be shunned rather than elected to powerful office.

It's to the point where although the media claims to continuously "fact check" them, they are bored with doing it and merely use rubber stamp phrases when writing about the lies. I.e., "so-in-so said, 'without evidence', that (fill in the blank lie) ".
The "fact check" basically has become meaningless because there is no punishment assigned by society for the lying.
So they need to be "un-mainstreamed", isolated in their own little bizarro world, and ridiculed from afar.

Weird is subjective. Its a vibe. Theres no real good way to fight back once youve got that label stuck to you because theres no logic or factual claim to argue against.
Its actually a lot like conservatives calling liberals elitist.

We should be speaking the truth about Donald Trump. American voters, regardless of age, should be confronted with the truth. If we're too nice to bruise some feelings we're probably too nice to keep our democracy.

It's easy to dismiss what is basically a noun (calling someone "a (disparaging) name", which is objective). But a "feeling" (as an adjective), is more difficult to tackle as it is subjective and trying to argue why you're "not weird" means "you are explaining", and as the strategists caution - "If you have to 'explain' then you 'are losing'".
And interestingly enough, someone in his odd circle seemed to realize this, which caused him to suddenly pivot and call her "evil" after calling her "a lunatic".
Zoomie1986
(1,213 posts)All that's been said, and the response has been a shrug from his cult followers and the media.
Weird works because it covers so much ground and has connotations to it that are difficult to push back against. It neuters him because it puts him on his back foot so much that he can't punch back.
I could go into the psycholinguistics behind its effectiveness on the political stage, when it's done right (as it is these days), but I don't want to bore anyone with that.

(6,115 posts)There will be plenty of time to get deadly serious, but for now, drawing attention to how weird they are and mocking them is effective as hell.
The media has spent a decade normalizing all of this weirdness. Time and time again we've said that if a Dem said these things, they'd be run out of politics on a rail. Well, this draws the public's attention back to understanding that none of this is normal, no matter how the media spins it. Yes, the public does need to be reminded.
There will be plenty of time to get more serious but right now there's a confidence and joy in this campaign and that is so welcome. Not only that, it's attractive. People are jumping on the bandwagon of the fun campaign. The contrast is the grievance campaign.
Kamala Harris' people are geniuses.
