Scoop: Trump stalled Black journalists interview over fact-checking
Source: Axios
Moments before former President Trump took the stage at the National Association of Black Journalists annual convention in Chicago on Wednesday, the organization's president was called back to address an issue.
Why it matters: Trump did not want to be fact-checked live and was refusing to go on stage, NABJ president Ken Lemon told Axios.
"[Trump's team] said, 'Well, can you not fact check? He's not going to take the stage if you fact-check,'" Lemon said.
The intrigue: The Q&A with the GOP presidential nominee was delayed more than an hour before he eventually joined a panel of Black journalists, including ABC News correspondent Rachel Scott, Fox News anchor Harris Faulkner and Semafor reporter Kadia Goba.

(22,456 posts)trump directly blames the ABC journalist hosting the interview personally for the equipment.
The setup was contracted operationally to the Hilton hotel's A/V vendor provided.
NABJ works with the provided vendor but was not responsible for any inoperation of the AV.

(20,645 posts)Once again Trump just flat out lied and assumed nobody would know.
No wonder he was so pissy!
This alone could cost him the election.

He NEVER takes responsibility for ANYTHING, and always changes subject rather than answer fair questions. Avoids by attacking.

(13,961 posts)Would have been lovely if that journalist had stood up and walked over to him and raised her voice to repeat the question, as one might do for an elderly relative with hearing loss. Closing with, did you hear that, Grandpa? would have been a bonus.

(13,961 posts)How could so-called journalists be surprised by any of this? I had to shake my head at the panelist who expressed surprise at Trump directly attacking those asking him questions. Have they all just awakened from 8-year comas?

(169,708 posts)but you will always have some who probably thought that they could "control the narrative".
Many of us have seen who among that group, are part of the White House correspondents and/or were assigned to a pool that attended any briefings/press conferences (whatever ones they had before completely shutting them down during the latter parts of his time in office) and/or who followed his previous 2 campaigns... and they know better (but obviously weren't listened to).

and that would be why no one pushes back when he spouts his stupid lies.

(13,961 posts)I doubt its much of an issue, usually, since he only seems to allow interviews with Fox News and even nuttier outlets.

(12,663 posts)To selling out the truth. Is that even considered journalism without the facts?
So, it looks like no one agreed to letting pedo Trump lie. (God how I wished they would have asked him about palling around with Epstein.)
He just went on and lied anyway. But at least they were ready to fact check him. He didn't stay long enough to be held to account.

(7,370 posts)....he would just whine "That's a very nasty question and you're a nasty person!!"
That's his MO. Simply a vile, imbecilic, pathological lying asshole.

(13,291 posts)He'll throw a tantrum and probably stomp off the stage (which his handlers did anyway, halfway through the event). Then he'll whine about "fake news."
What I learned in Journalism 101: "If they don't want you to report it, it's news. If they do want you to write about it, it's propaganda."

(41,622 posts)When someone "misspeaks" and then later corrects himself, well I guess we can say it wasn't an intentional lie. It was just an error. But with Chump we know it's all intentional, and this is the proof.
He doesn't want to be called a liar to his face, during the interview. No that would be too embarrassing. He wants to insult and berate these Black female journalists to THEIR faces and not get called out.
Why do journalists of any color accept HIS rules? I don't get it, they're allowing Chump to use them and project his bulls**t out to their audiences. And they can't even call out his constant lies. American journalists please STOP giving Chump the free TV time. He has shown time and again that he doesn't deserve it.

(1,213 posts)But this is a complete fail on the part of NABJ.
Why didn't someone start recording or turning on some mics to go live with that wrangling about no fact-checking?
And why didn't they respond with, 'We gain nothing from not fact-checking. It's what good journalists do. If he's so against honest questioning that he refuses to go onstage, then we will go out there and announce that he's refused to appear, because he doesn't want to tell the truth. So take your scared little boy and run away like the cowards you are, while we go do our jobs with our heads held high.'
*Either* tactic would have resulted in a huge story.
Zoomie1986
(1,213 posts)Letting that idiot control all of the narrative because they care more about future access than about reporting facts.
The US media is so very stupid that they refuse to grasp that they *do not need him nearly as much as he needs them.* Without the media, he's just another two-bit schmuck languishing in obscurity or jail. The media can and does survive without him. They can make him or break him, but he can't do that to them unless they continue to be an accessory to his grab for power. Then they'll learn that someone can break them, in ways they don't even want to think about.
They need to wake up and start doing their jobs. It's been at least 40 years since they've had a clue what it is.

(22,582 posts)...but calling that a complete fail for NABJ seems a bit much to me. Sure, we would all love to have been able to hear a recording of what he was saying backstage, but the interview itself was a complete fail for Trump. He made an absolute ass of himself and has been skewered over it, repeatedly.
Overall, I think the event was a win for NABJ.

(10,635 posts)...maybe as a group, to make it clear the fact-checking issue is why he started late, not some made-up bs about equipment failure.
Fact-check, indeed.
