(1,783 posts)I did basic training at Lackland. Back then security wasn't nearly what we'd see today. Someone comes shooting, they're getting their asses handed back to them, no doubts. But, it's good to know what and when is coming under certain circumstances, so a little flyby is needed.
Some idiot MAGAs are trying to see how hard it's going to be to get on base, in case Duh Leader doesn't win. I wouldn't doubt this doesn't happen somewhere else, too. Possibly at some government offices, FBI offices, and so on.

(697 posts)I wouldnt be surprised if this wasnt an organized paramilitary terrorist attack. The question is simply who it was and what their cause is.
stopdiggin
(15,463 posts)that kind of goes against definition - and the playbook.
BrianTheEVGuy
(697 posts)Whether a target is military or civilian matters less than what the intent is, especially if the targeted military institution is all-volunteer (as the US military is).
The intent of terrorism is simply to create and sustain a climate of fear.
stopdiggin
(15,463 posts)by definition attacking a military target is viewed differently and accorded different motivation than attacks against non-military (civilian, infrastructure, political, etc.)

(15,463 posts)Like in established global opinion - standards and codes? And if you cant see an appreciable difference between attacking military targets, and the slaughter of civilians (to induce terror) - I think that would make you rather the outlier and exception

(26,014 posts)They are only guesses, based on who might have motivation.
One possibility is a RW militia trying to get weapons, which does not seem probable to me because they have members who are in the military who steal material for them. But, they might have been doing a trial run to see what they can do against a military base in case of an armed coup attempt.
Another possibility is a pro Palestinian group staging a dramatic protest against the US military. But they usually identify themselves during their demonstrations in order to maximize attention to their cause.
Other than those two groups, I'm not sure who else would be motivated to attack a US military base.

(80,465 posts)Think about the ridiculous, outlandish ways dump behaves publicly, attacking our beloved institutions, our military, etc., and remember him on that stage in Helsinki with pootin? I recall very well and my blood pressure goes through the roof the way he deferred to that shitbag.
I honestly believe a large part of dump's agenda is to embarrass the United States. You ask why. I see the reason as that pootin (and China) have been quite vocal about wanting to be "equal to" the United States on the world stage. They are very jealous. Of our economy, our educational instututions (of course another target of the govt of pootin here in the States), our medical system, flawed as it is, it's a hell of a lot better than whatever nightmares they call healthcare in ruskie land, I'm sure! Not to mention our engineering, science, space programs, the list could go on virtually forever.
JMO, of course, but it seems pretty clear to me.

(34,295 posts)They run all over the place over there.
Apparently it's part of their gang initiation.
I had an encounter with them a few months ago. They darted out of an apartment complex and scaled an eight foot iron rail fence and ran as fast as gazelles. Lots of drugs in the area. We moved away from that part of town in 1994. Didn't want our kids going to school over there. My husband was a principal over there until he retired. It's a rough part of town.

On November 5, 2009, a mass shooting took place at Fort Hood (now Fort Cavazos), near Killeen, Texas. Nidal Hasan, a U.S. Army major and psychiatrist, fatally shot 13 people and injured more than 30 others. It was the deadliest mass shooting on an American military base and the deadliest terrorist attack in the United States since the September 11 attacks until it was surpassed by the San Bernardino attack in 2015.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_San_Bernardino_attack
On December 2, 2015, a terrorist attack, consisting of a mass shooting and an attempted bombing, occurred at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California, United States. The perpetrators, Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, a married couple living in the city of Redlands, targeted a San Bernardino County Department of Public Health training event and Christmas party of about 80 employees in a rented banquet room. Fourteen people were killed and 22 others were seriously injured. Farook was an American born citizen of Pakistani descent, who worked as a health department employee. Malik was a Pakistani-born green card holder. After the shooting, the couple fled in a rented Ford Expedition SUV. Four hours later, police pursued their vehicle and killed them in a shootout, which also left two officers injured.

(34,295 posts)They even have a "gang hair cut" named after a nearby road: "The Marbach Haircut".
One election night, I was trying to put signs up at a library over there. It was around 1 am and I couldn't get the signs in and I was spending alot of time at the site. All of a sudden, three guys com running out of the nearby apartment complex. They quickly scale an eight foot fence and off they run up Military highway and disappear into the night. They were running super fast. It was the weirdest thing. It was scary too, because they appeared to come from nowhere. I gave up on my signs because I did not feel safe. it's one of the roughest areas in San Antonio.
reACTIONary
(7,162 posts)... to get a picture. It is, indeed, quite 'distinctive'.
I used to live there... over on Andros street, off military highway. We were all military on that street. So sad to hear it's deteriorated like that. I have fond memories of the area. We used to walk down to a small strip mall on marbach road all the time. I was stationed permanent party at Lackland. My daughter was born at Wilford Hall hospital.
The base used to be surrounded by Holly bushes. I'm assuming they upgraded security fencing since 911. Only question I consistently got wrong on the training exams. I refused to call anything ringed by Holly bushes secure... and they couldn't make me say it!

(4,848 posts)There was an attack on NAS Corpus Christi in 2020 that was apparently motivated by Islamic extremism. And there was a mass shooting in a classroom building at NAS Pensacola in 2019, also motivated by Islamic extremism.
I think this is unlikely to be a homegrown right wing event.
