Democrats turn their roll call into a dance party with celebrities, state-specific songs and Lil Jon

Source: AP

Updated 11:59 PM EDT, August 20, 2024

CHICAGO (AP) — Convention roll call votes can be staid and cheesy, but Democrats turned theirs into the ultimate dance party on Tuesday.

DJ Cassidy stood onstage in what appeared to be a double-breasted satin suit of royal blue, spinning a special song for each state and territory awarding their delegates to Vice President Kamala Harris at the Democratic National Convention. What America got was a mashup of an elite karaoke night: Detroit native Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” for Michigan, Dropkick Murphys’ “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” for Massachusetts and Tupac Shakur’s “California Love” for California.

Georgia brought out one of its natives in person: Atlanta’s Lil Jon striding through Chicago’s United Center to the beats of “Turn Down for What,” his song with DJ Snake.

In short, Democrats were determined to put the party in political party, part of their broader effort to project joy and positive energy even as they issue dire warnings about the need to beat Republican nominee Donald Trump.

I like how Lil Jon changed those lyrics to "VP Harris, Governor Walz"

Our side is exponentially more excited than the GOP

I heard they played Kansas, the bands, music for Kansas. I can't stop smiling over that. Those guys really did it and even now I smile whenever I think or hear them. When they were beginning we had never had anything like that kind of big deal. They did it and I got to watch it and it still makes me smile. I can't wait to see it later. 😃

That opening guitar lick is quite memorable. But you may be right that is was "1999"

either by the same artist or different ones (PA's had at least 2 different artists and their songs that were played).

So for Prince (since he has so many) the DJ probably did a couple excerpts of his popular ones. I know I was texting with my sisters and cousins as the roll call was going and we were IDing songs... I did hear the 1999 opening riff. I know MN initially passed so they could go towards the end with California. I have an uncle who lives in MN so was paying attention.

. . .but then Minnesota asked to cast their votes later.

When they did, next-to-last from California (symbolically for Walz and Harris), then they played "1999"

Democrats have always been cooler than Republicans. Republicans are usually squares. Not hip. Since the days of contrast between the cool guy Kennedy versus the detestable Richard Nixon, Democrats have always been hipper than Republicans. We also have better ties to Hollywood. We can produce more entertaining events and ads. This Convention is well produced. We have better entertainers supporting us. The Republicans just have old weirdos like Hulk Hogan and Kid Rock. I am hoping that Taylor Swift endorses Kamala soon. We have better celebrities on our side.
