Trump suggests he might skip ABC debate with Harris

The Sept. 10 debate with ABC is the only one both campaigns have agreed to do with one of the major networks.

Former president Donald Trump suggested Sunday evening that he might skip a Sept. 10 ABC News debate with Vice President Kamala Harris (D), after agreeing to participate as the GOP presidential nominee earlier this month.

“I watched ABC FAKE NEWS this morning, both lightweight reporter Jonathan Carl’s (K?) ridiculous and biased interview of Tom Cotton (who was fantastic!), and their so-called Panel of Trump Haters, and I ask, why would I do the Debate against Kamala Harris on that network?” Trump asked in a social media post Sunday evening.

The Sept. 10 debate is the only one that both campaigns have officially committed to with a network. Trump’s renewed questioning of the ABC News debate comes as Harris has increased her lead in national polls and is gaining ground in key Midwestern swing states. As of Sunday, The Washington Post polling average has the vice president leading in Wisconsin by three points, in Pennsylvania by two points and in Michigan by less than one point. Trump continues to lead in the Sun Belt states, but Harris has significantly narrowed the gap.

It’s not the first time the former president has suggested he would back out of the ABC News debate. Earlier this month, Trump said that he would no longer appear at the Sept. 10 debate — previously scheduled with President Joe Biden before he dropped out of the race — and would only debate Harris at a Sept 4. debate hosted by Fox News. Trump, however, reversed course several days later and said at a news conference that he would debate Harris on ABC. Trump also proposed debates on Fox News and NBC.

debate her on FOX is just his attempt to set her up because he htinks FOX would rig it to make him look good and her bad.

She should not agree to that, even though she could still kick his ass.

Trump suggests he will probably "Cherry Out" of the debate with Harris..........Just like he "Cherried Out" of the draft.......

If he agrees to debate, it will be because of his request of a "milk toast" moderator, pre-arranged softball questions for him, NO kill button on HIS mic but one on Kamala's mic, no stoppage of him running on after his time ends, and no calling him for shouting across the stage when Kamala is talking. He also will stipulate he can "STALK" Kamala around the stage, like he was allowed to do with Hillary.......

and whaddya know...

Oh and OT but overnight I heard horror of horrors (I keep the radio on down low at night and woke up at around 2 am to hear a CBS on the hour blip about this) -

WCBS 880 radio ending all-news programming after nearly 60 years

I have always been fascinated since I was a kid, at the "660 WNBC", "770 WABC", and "880 WCBS" station call letters and numbers. I remember when WNBC changed formats (and then call letters) from music years ago and now apparently WCBS is doing the same to do sports in competition to former WNBC, now WFAN.

KYW's NYC sister station 1010 WINS will be their only all-news station there.

And good morning (I think).

News is no longer news. It's infotainment to increase profitability. This is why most news stations are no different that reading the rags on the rack at the checkout line of the grocery stores. WCBS didn't fit that model. Who cares what's good for the public at large. Right?

The fact that there were 2 CBS radio affiliates in the same market was a result of the obsessive communications deregulation in the '90s. I would have preferred that they kept the original CALL letters though (and news format).

Be that as it may, WCBS was an Audacy station and Audacy is now in the process of having George Soros' Fund (yes that guy ) taking over a majority stake -

Report: Audacy Investment Part Of A ‘Bigger Audio Buying Spree’ For Soros Fund.

Apr 10, 2024
OLIVIER HOSLET

The name of billionaire investor George Soros has become part of the radio lexicon ever since his Soros Fund Management invested hundreds of millions to become the largest stakeholder in Audacy when it emerges from Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization. The Soros fund was also one of several investors in Latino Media Network, which purchased 18 radio stations in 10 major markets from TelevisaUnivision more than a year ago. Now a story published by Semafor suggests these investments “could be the beginning of a bigger audio buying spree.”

One potential target named in the story is Cumulus Media. The fund has “privately discussed acquiring other major radio companies, such as the limping, publicly traded Cumulus Media,” the story says, while acknowledging that FCC local ownership caps would put limits on common ownership of radio’s second and third largest companies. (We would point out that Cumulus has twice rebuffed efforts to buy the company by Connoisseur Media CEO Jeff Warshaw, who said “they did not seem to be interested whatsoever in an offer, despite multiple attempts.” Warshaw offered $15-$17 a share for Cumulus in the summer of 2022 when its stock was trading for around $12 a share. The stock closed at $3.15 on Tuesday.

Cumulus is also attempting to block a potential hostile takeover by Renew Group Private Ltd., a Singapore-based shareholder group led by Manoj Bhargava, the founder of 5-Hour Energy drink. To thwart the effort, Cumulus in February adopted a so-called poison pill to make buying up shares of a company beyond a defined limit financially unpalatable, to discourage acquirers from gaining a controlling interest.

The Semafor story cites three unnamed people who have been involved in discussions with Soros executives. A Cumulus spokesperson did not reply to an Inside Radio request for comment.

So I expect this is part of the restructuring going on behind the scenes.

One of my beefs with "our side" (liberals/progressives, etc) has been that we whine about "the media" but own none. Many didn't even really support "Air America", which itself, self-destructed, so we will have to see what happens here with Audacy.

If someone is surprised and disappointed Trump will lie to weasel out of a debate they haven’t been paying attention. So if it’s not the blithering idiots buying the story, who wants to hear that story repeated for the 40,000th time? And who buys ad space next to such fluff stories so those Trump-lovers will hear their commercial message?

Follow the money.

Thanks to "social media", which is "media", there is so much MORE "information" (whether true or not) being put out there when compared to the days of the 3 (or 4 if you want to count DuMont but way before Fox) major "commercial" networks and one "public" TV network, some radio stations, and newspapers/news magazines.

I.e., we like to talk about having "more competition" but then when there is an excess of it, that can result in having an undulating mass of "noise", with entities trying to "shout above the baseline" to get attention, often with frivolous, clickbait lures.

Either way, it’s a win. The only way to lose is to give the Orange Chicken what he wants - media eyes on him for this cheap drama.

Donald Trump agreed to a Sept. 10 presidential debate. Then he reversed course. Then he reversed course again. Now he's apparently changing his mind again.

https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/donald-trump-hedges-presidential-debate-kamala-harris-election-2024-rcna168170

Keeping up with Donald Trump’s positions on presidential debates has been like watching a misshaped ball bounce in unpredictable directions. As the post-convention general election phase begins in earnest, the problem actually seems to be getting worse. The Washington Post reported:

Former president Donald Trump suggested Sunday evening that he might skip a Sept. 10 ABC News debate with Vice President Kamala Harris (D), after agreeing to participate as the GOP presidential nominee earlier this month.

Before delving into the Republican’s latest online tantrum, let’s review how we arrived at this point.....

By and large, much of the political world simply ignored the Republican’s odd rambling and remained focused on the Sept. 10 debate that both campaigns had agreed to — that is, until Trump published a new rant that put the future of that event in doubt.

“I watched ABC FAKE NEWS this morning, both lightweight reporter Jonathan Carl’s(K?) ridiculous and biased interview of Tom Cotton (who was fantastic!), and their so-called Panel of Trump Haters, and I ask, why would I do the Debate against Kamala Harris on that network?” the former president wrote.......

According to the reporting, which has not been independently verified by MSNBC or NBC News, members of Team Harris want the microphones to stay on — in keeping with modern practices — because they assume Trump won’t be able to keep his composure for 90 minutes.

“We have told ABC and other networks seeking to host a possible October debate that we believe both candidates’ mics should be live throughout the full broadcast,” Brian Fallon, a senior adviser on the Harris campaign, told Politico. “Our understanding is that Trump’s handlers prefer the muted microphone because they don’t think their candidate can act presidential for 90 minutes on his own. We suspect Trump’s team has not even told their boss about this dispute because it would be too embarrassing to admit they don’t think he can handle himself against Vice President Harris without the benefit of a mute button.”

Where does this leave us? With a great deal of uncertainty about whether Trump and Harris will ever share a stage.

42. This Trump "working the refs"
Mon Aug 26, 2024, 12:54 PM
Aug 2024

There is no way he can resist a free prime time audience.

He is just doing this so ABC will kowtow to his demands of cutting the mic when his turn and Harris' turns are over - One of the most memorable moments of the 2020 debates were when Biden made that "off mic" comment when Trump was talking. Biden couldn't do that on the CNN debate back in June.

Trump also wants no live fact checking - that killed him in 2020 when even Fox called him out for some of his blatant lies. This killed Biden in 2024 because it allowed Trump to get up and spew lies for his entire time with no pushback from the CNN moderators.

The media & Democrats are falling for the same old shit yet again.

"Working the refs" is a sports term where the coach of one team yells & screams about how unfair certain types of calls are (the block vs charge in basketball) in the hopes that the 50/50 calls later in the game will the way of their team. Coach K at Duke used to be an expert at this - he had a guy (Shane Battier, for example) that he would sell as an expert at taking charges & then get upset if the call ever went against Battier. And, more often than not, at key times late in the game, if there was a close call on block vs charge, Battier would usually win it.
