1864 abortion ban in Arizona is officially off the books

PHOENIX Arizonas Civil War-era ban on nearly all abortions officially is being repealed Saturday.
The western swing state has been whipsawed over recent months, starting with the Arizona Supreme Court deciding in April to let the state enforce the long-dormant 1864 law that criminalized all abortions except when a womans life was jeopardized. Then state lawmakers voted on a bill to repeal that law once and for all.
Democratic Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs signed the bill in May, declaring it was just the beginning of a fight to protect reproductive health care in Arizona. I will continue doing everything in my power to protect reproductive freedoms, because I trust women to make the decisions that are best for them, and know politicians do not belong in the doctors office, Hobbs said in a statement.
Abortion has sharply defined Arizonas political arena since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. As the November general election approaches, the issue remains a focus of Democratic campaigns, and it will be up to Arizona voters to decide whether to enshrine the right to abortion in the state constitution.

What's this Republican word code crap about enshrining? In everyday lexicon, English speakers never use the word enshrine unless talking about something very holy or a sacrament. We normally use the word "allow" Right-wing religious nut jobs started using that term.. They enshrined them to use their Waterway for a picture. Doesn't that sound a little strange?

(44 posts)Here in AZ we still have a 15 wk ban, an obligatory totally clinically unnecessary ultrasound, a 24-hour waiting period, and waaaayyyy too much private info being reported to the State for each abortion.
Thankfully, the referendum for a real amendment to guarantee access has HUGE support. I'm really hopeful that it will pass! My good friend and colleague is on the national Planned Parenthood board and says things are looking good!

(1,965 posts)Nebraska is one of nine states expected to vote on abortion rights in November, as abortion rights advocates seek to undo new abortion bans and restrictions passed by Republican-controlled states in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court's 2022 ruling eliminating the long-standing nationwide right to abortion. Policy regarding abortion and women's reproductive rights in general is a key issue in this year's presidential election.
