CBS News says it will be up to Vance and Walz to fact-check each other in veep debate

CBS News, hosting vice presidential candidates JD Vance and Tim Walz for the general election campaign’s third debate next week, says it will be up to the politicians — not the moderators — to check the facts of their opponents.

During ABC’s debate between presidential contenders Kamala Harris and Donald Trump earlier this month, network moderators on four occasions pointed out inaccurate statements by Trump, and none by Harris. That infuriated the former president and his supporters, who complained it was unfair.

Last spring, CNN moderators did not question any facts presented by Trump and President Joe Biden in the debate where Biden’s poor performance eventually led to him dropping out of the race.

On Friday, CBS the onus will be on Vance and Walz to point out misstatements by the other, and that “the moderators will facilitate those opportunities” during rebuttal time. The network said its own misinformation unit, CBS News Confirmed, will provide real-time fact-checking during the debate on its live blog and on social media, and on the air during post-debate analysis.

In other words Tim will have to waste his allotted time calling out JD's lies because the moderators don't want to do their job (and JD has already told us that he has no aversion to telling lie after lie).

2. The purpose of news media is to give its consumers truthful, factual information.

When they give a megaphone and a platform to someone who lies constantly, and then refuse to correct or even point out those lies, they render themselves useless. Worse than useless, actually, as they actively disseminate false information and propaganda.

I don't understand their reasoning. It is like a company selling a car with no brakes. The customer gets the zoom-zoom but is put in terrible danger.

And give them each a live feed of the chyron visible through their podiums. That way, if someone says something so outrageously false it is easy to confidently debunk without research (this will happen), the network could at least nominally perform its duty of informing the public, AND Vance would also have his chance to refute that fact-checking or just let it go. Either response would be meaningful.
