Longtime MLB star Pete Rose died on Monday afternoon, his agent confirmed to TMZ.
He was 83. Specifics surrounding his death are not yet known.
Rose spent 24 years in Major League Baseball, and he retired as the leagues all-time hits leader, among other things. The Cincinnati native got his start with the Reds in 1963, and he spent the first 16 seasons of his career with the organization. He won a pair of World Series titles in 1975 and 1976, which marked the clubs first championships in 35 years.

(27,407 posts)I don't think he should've been banned for the rest of his life---ten years maybe was fitting, but not forever. I hope MLB sees fit to put him in now.

(7,964 posts)The number Cardinal rule in baseball is no betting. He knew it, as all players do, and repeatedly violated the rule. It is not the same as doing drugs. He lied about it repeatedly when found out, continued to lie and even bet on games he was managing.

I can still name the Big Red Machine's starting lineup in '75.
That's how I'm going to remember him. As a player, before he left in Free Agency (for a measly million bucks a year - how he offended so many then).

(38,108 posts)As the Reds Manager/Player, in the stupid Marge Schott ownership era. Not sure if he ever bet against the Reds. He paid dearly for that, to a degree few others in the checkered past of MLB have.
Now gambling has saturated all professional sports.

(6,932 posts)The way the article is presented here, leaving out 33% of one's WS rings is kind of a big deal. Most reading this wouldn't click on the link and will go around swearing he only had 2 rings.
