Second dose of this year's COVID vaccine recommended for some people age 65 and up

Immunocompromised people who are age 65 or older should get a second dose of the 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine, according to the latest recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In a statement released Wednesday, the CDC said the second dose should be received six months after the first dose.

The CDC also said its recommendations allow for flexibility for those who are moderately or severely immunocompromised to consider additional doses (three or more). in consultation with their health care provider.

In August, the Food and Drug Administration greenlit updated COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna for the 2024 fall season. The updated shots were revised to target the KP.2 variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, and medical experts say it will also provide protection against other recent strains.

This was part of a now-annual process undertaken by the FDA and health authorities around the world to update the vaccines to protect against newer strains of the virus. Similar to previous seasons, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all Americans ages 6 months and older get a shot of the updated 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine to protect against another expected surge of the virus this fall and winter.

6. I'm a bit confused

I’ve kept up with CDC schedule from the start. I had my 24-25 trivalent shot Oct 14, ten days ago.So they are saying I’ll need another within 6 months? I kinda figured that. Only more like 4-5 months. Why the recommendation now?

They are probably looking at "real time" data from any in the impacted groups who routinely have blood tests that can show their immune response, and can pick up how the immune response declines over time (and the rate of that).

I expect there may have been some who immediately got one when they hit the doctors or pharmacies the last week of August or some time early in September, so they might have a couple months worth of data on those people and determined that the drop off is following a similar rate of waning that would warrant a 2nd shot in the 6 month period (which would be around February for those early birds).

I got my shot around October 3. I am now sitting here, slowly recovering from a bout of COVID that I got about a week ago. And I'm over 65.

My daughter got COVID (first time) at the convention in Chicago, and she is in a vulnerable category, so trying to time the next vaccine, and her doctor advised early November, two or three weeks before Thanksgiving.

Were you able to take Paxlovid? My daughter was able to get it a couple hours after she tested positive (she started feeling sick the day before, but didn't test positive), and within 24 hours she felt much better.

Then again, I was never that seriously ill. Just a slight fever, runny nose, and sneezing. Cough has been mild. Right now, just feeling slightly "crummy." I should be 100% within a couple more days.

22. I got COVID on September 11, and I'm still pretty weak. It had been several months since I had the old

kind of booster shot, and I was ready to get the new one when I was about to go out of town. But the rural area where I live didn't have the new shot in yet...it was supposed to be in the day after I flew out of town. So I figured I'd get it when I got back Sept. 16 +/-. I'm sure I got infected with COVID on the plane.

Now I have to wait 3 months AFTER I had COVID to get the new vaccine, that is more targeted to the current strain, which is the strain I got!

Really pisses me off! I'm 75.

25. I got all my shots during the pandemic. I thought I was good. Last month I got a REALLY BAD case of Covid.

I thought I was gonna die. Continuous head ache and body aches like I was getting beat up with a rubber hose. Taste, gone. Smell, gone..no appetite and had to force fluids. Temp between 98.6 and 100.5. Back and forth, up and down for about two weeks.NO RESPIRATORY ISSUES.
I'm ok now but taste is still off and Im tired all the time..
I sleep 9-10 hours a nite, with a afternoon nap thrown in for good measure.. I get about two things done a day and then have to sit down. This sucks....
I would not wish this on anyone.

24. You can check your county/municipality health department

to see if they still have remaining vaccine stocks from their original funding and are offering limited no-cost vaccines. Since so many have stopped even getting this anymore, chances are they may still have some that were already funded.

30. So far, these vaccines haven't really been "annual only" like the flu shot

so they're not there yet. But I expect if people were able to utilize as many additional precautions as possible (the usual masking and handwashing, etc.), they could potentially get away with it once a year unless they are in an immuno-compromised and/or age-specific group.

I have heard them talk about "the summer wave" and then the "fall wave". I think they pick that up as a story whenever CDC must be sending something out about it. When this latest version got approved in August, the "wave" mention happened as well.

I think too, they did it more this year due to the concern that fewer and fewer people were getting COVID vaccinations, let alone any OTHER type like flu (and notably those basic ones needed by children).

As a result of covid - combined possibly with vaccine - I ended up with a condition that can be seen as immune related.

So I'm in a grey area. I feel like we're on our own with this one.

My issue (my own diagnosis) was that my antibody level got too high between covid and a recent vaccine shot.

Thus, it kicked off a condition. Which by the way is resolved.

21. I've been waiting for the release of the

Covid/Flu duo vaccine. Was offered the flu shot yesterday while at the doc's office, so I gave up and went ahead on getting it. I'm now behind on Covid by at least one, if not two shots. Anybody know if these vaccines are such that if I get the latest shot, it includes whatever changes were made in the one or two I missed? I've gotten Moderna from the first, and have stayed with it throughout.

I went on and got both the same day (had done that last year too), with the flu shot in one arm and COVID in the other, back on Oct. 7. I have also only had Moderna and it was the latest version that was approved near the end of August.
