Federal prosecutors in Manhattan said on Friday that Iranian plotters had discussed a plan to assassinate Donald J. Trump before he was re-elected as president this week.
One of the plotters said that he was assigned in September to carry out the plan by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps of Iran, the prosecutors said in court papers.
An Iranian operative said he was told to put aside other efforts he was undertaking on behalf of the Revolutionary Guards and focus on surveilling, and ultimately, assassinating Mr. Trump, according to a criminal complaint filed in Manhattan federal court.
The operative told a Revolutionary Guards Corps official that such a plan would cost a huge amount of money, the complaint said. In response, the official said, We have already spent a lot of money, adding that moneys not an issue.

They have zero reason to love him, plus I imagine he will green light the IDF to strike their nuclear program

(14,221 posts)It sounds like a plant. Aren't the Iranians cozy with Putin? Even if they weren't, isn't a Trump presidency a gift to them?

Can't Putin run some interference for his puppet?
I feel like I missed a chapter. I remember the sanctions, but I thought Putin had enough influence in Iran that he could be DTs fixer.

(137,500 posts)WASHINGTON (AP) The Justice Department on Friday disclosed an Iranian murder-for-hire plot to kill Donald Trump, charging a man who said he had been tasked by a government official before this weeks election with planning the assassination of the Republican president-elect.
Investigators were told of the plan to kill Trump by Farhad Shakeri, an accused Iranian government asset who spent time in American prisons for robbery and who authorities say maintains a network of criminal associates enlisted by Tehran for surveillance and murder-for-hire plots.
Shakeri told the FBI that a contact in Irans paramilitary Revolutionary Guard instructed him this past September to set aside other work he was doing and assemble a plan within seven days to surveil and ultimately kill Trump, according to a criminal complaint unsealed in federal court in Manhattan.
The official was quoted by Shakeri as saying that We have already spent a lot of money and that moneys not an issue. Shakeri told investigators the official told him that if he could not put together a plan within the seven-day timeframe, then the plot would be paused until after the election because the official assumed Trump would lose and that it would be easier to kill him then, the complaint said.

(106,604 posts)This is not how such plots are normally discovered. OK, they realised (informants, surveillance, whatever) that Loadholt and Rivera were up to no good - planning the assassination of Masih Alinejad, and maybe Trump too, and those 2 were arrested. Either they gave up Shakeri's name, or surveillance etc. got that too. So they phone him in Iran, and he just says "yeah, I was arranging murder in your country - what you gonna do about it?"? Weird. I mean, people say "don't admit anything to the authorities" when you've been arrested, but when you're safely in an enemy country, and the authorities in that country won't want details of their plots going public? Seems a really dumb move to cop to it all.
