Trump win means 'time has come' to annex parts of West Bank, Israeli minister says

Source: Washington Post

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich welcomed President-elect Donald Trump’s electoral victory Monday, saying that “the time has come” to extend full Israeli sovereignty over the occupied West Bank.

He made the comment a day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a recorded statement that he has spoken three times with Trump since the election and that they “see eye to eye on the Iranian threat.”

Israel’s conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon are set to dominate meetings in the Middle East and at the White House this week, after deadly Israeli airstrikes over the weekend highlighted the increasingly brutal toll.

On Monday, top officials from Arab and Islamic countries are meeting for a summit in Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, to “discuss the continued Israeli aggression on the Palestinian territories and the Lebanese Republic, and the current developments in the region,” according to Saudi state media.

it is not a shock that radical right wingers in Israel would call for this because that has been their openly stated position for decades. Gee I remember getting all kinds of nasty flack back about 11 months ago when I said this would be part of the right wing plan.

I won't go so far as to claim that Netanyahu *wanted* Oct7 to happen, but--much like PNAC in the US--once the tragedy happened they were fully prepared to run with it.

It seems clear that annexation of Gaza was the goal all along, and Netanyahu's reassurances to the contrary were clearly false from the outset.

But wait! "This is all Hamas' fault, and they can stop it any time they want," I'm told.

It's why the ceasefire negotiations continued to be sabotaged by Netanyahu. A ceasefire would have prevented the ethnic cleansing, the completion of the destruction and deaths by war and pestilence.

October 7th presented the opportunity to create Greater Israel. As you say, just like 9/11 and PNAC. I think the results will be just as dire.

It dismays me not just that this was easily foreseen and could have been prevented, but also that I suspect that it was in fact likely foreseen and tolerated - even indirectly facilitated by the West. It also bothers me that even saying that makes me a terrorist supporter in the eyes of some.

So I just want to say I condemn Hamas!! Human shields!! Effing terrorist scum!!

Perhaps Biden and Harris could have done more, maybe. But significant portions of elected congress favours an all in for Isreal position. So it is hard to clamp down on a foreign power.

most of the men simply wouldn't vote for a woman. Simple misogyny...they don't respect women in their culture and see them as second class citizens. So much so they voted against their own interests. I've done business with these guys and know how they think. I had one dumb ass tell me "we haven't gotten anywhere with Biden or Harris, might as well roll the dice with Trump". They're screwed in the head IMO and their votes went exactly as I thought they would. Sexist assholes for the most part.

The goal has been obvious for a long time. Gaza and the West Bank are to be absorbed into Israel.
Ironically, the phrase, "from the river to the sea" has a new meaning as Palestinians are discovering. Trump will do nothing to stop the ethnic cleansing that the Netahyahu government is engaging in.
These two men are birds of a feather.
