"Democrat propaganda": Marjorie Taylor Greene plans to team up with Musk to defund NPR

Source: Salon

When she's not claiming that her opposition controls the weather or accusing her own party of covering up sexual assault, Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene is gearing up to work in President-elect Donald Trump's second term, and she has some novel ideas about bringing down the deficit.

Greene has been tapped by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a new House subcommittee working with the pair's not-yet-created Department of Government Efficiency. During a stop by Fox News on Sunday, Greene gave a glimpse at the sort of line items the government-budget-slashing department would focus on.

"It's all over," Greene said of supposed government waste. "We'll be looking at everything from government-funded media programs like NPR that spread nothing but Democrat propaganda...all kinds of programs that don't help the American people."

The statement led "defund NPR" to trend briefly on Musk-owned social media app X. In truth, NPR receives very little of its budget directly from the federal government. How exactly to calculate its funding is up for debate as money granted to local public radio stations via the government-funded Corporation for Public Broadcasting is frequently used to pay for the rights to air NPR-produced national programming locally. However, the conception of NPR as an entity that only exists thanks to government largesse is false.

They get very little federal funds. They may not even want the funds and be able to run it like they want. Taking federal funds cord with some rules. They may be better off without the crumbs they get.

The Truth is “Democrat propaganda”

“All kinds of programs that don’t help the American People”. This is based on MTGs extensive and objective 10 year investigation of NPR programming? NPR offers programs everyday that help the American people. I think it’s quite apparent that MTG doesn’t not listen to NPR and that’s a BFD relative to her warped, skewed, altered, wrong perspective. But you go girl!

(although 'irony' might not be the best descriptor). Is the number of times I have seen NPR derided as 'right-wing sell-out' here on this sight.

Damned if you do, and damned if you ...
And - still not entirely sure ... Does that mean that you might be doing something right - once in a while? Or - just garbage all the way around?

Funding pre-2000
edit
During the 1970s and early 1980s, the majority of NPR funding came from the federal government. Steps were taken during the Reagan administration in the 1980s to completely wean NPR from government support, but the 1983 funding crisis forced the network to make immediate changes.

According to CPB, in 2009 11.3% of the aggregate revenues of all public radio broadcasting stations were funded from federal sources, principally through CPB;[46] in 2012 10.9% of the revenues for Public Radio came from federal sources.[47]

The flagship programs Morning Edition & ATC were the ones that consistently downplayed his bullshit, with NPR's ombudsman famously performing all kinds of acrobatics to explain why Trump's obvious lies weren't actually obvious lies. (Spoiler alert: "because he believes them.&quot

It's called "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood." It's animated. The production company Fred Rogers founded makes it. It teaches kids the same lessons Fred did, and it is REALLY cute. Daniel is part of a family of tigers in which Dad Tiger dresses just like Fred Rogers did. The first time I saw this was in the Spokane VA waiting room; they had the TV set to it and the parallels to "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" are quite obvious.

I thought it would be the first week. Very surprised PBS isn't in her sights also - maybe she has that channel blocked? Or more likely she can't figure out how to use that complicated remote.

She may just trigger NPR's greatest fundraising ever.

Plus those weekend shows? The Moth? Livewire? What are they even about? They confuse my tiny Repuke brain.

The mission of United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM) is to inform, engage, and connect people around the world in support of freedom and democracy. The Agency’s mission is reinforced by those of the individual broadcasters (VOA, RFE/RL, RFA) that are overseen by USAGM.
