Fetterman compares Trump's Greenland talk to Louisiana Purchase
Source: ABC News
Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) compared President-elect Trumps talk of acquiring Greenland to the Louisiana Purchase.
Fetterman joined Fox News, alongside Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.), on Tuesday to discuss the concern surrounding Trumps call to acquire the Danish territory as he prepares to take office again.
Theres a lot of talk about Greenland, for example, and
theres a lot of freak-outs and of course, I would never support taking it by force, Fetterman said.
He continued, noting it would be a responsible conversation to discuss acquisition, including just buying it out.

(4,392 posts)From a national security, strategic, and economic perspective, there are valid reasons for considering Greenland as a U.S. territory. However, Trumps approach to the idea was utterly absurd. Sending his son there with MAGA hats, antagonizing an ally, and even hinting at taking it by force is beyond ridiculous. Trumps interest in Greenland had nothing to do with its strategic importance or the well-being of its people. He likely saw it as an opportunity to exploit resources for personal gain and to benefit his billionaire friends, like Elon Musk. Thats the kind of response Fetterman should have offeredcalling out Trumps self-serving motivations while still acknowledging the strategic value of Greenland.

The term "National Security" is what the US has used for every BS war it's gotten into since WWII.
Those words have allowed the US to crawl into bed with tyrants and dictators, those words allowed a Catholic Bishop to be murdered in his own church, allowed a group of American nuns to be raped and murdered, allowed the wanton slaughter of innocent men, women and children!!!

It things that would be nice are often impossible or unlikely to occur. A responsible adult knows this and makes realistic plans, and not spend time on wishful fantasies.
Yes, Greenland is strategically positioned and has many valuable resources. How to get access to them?
1) Ask them to join us
2) Buy it
3) Take them over by force
4) Be a good ally to them so that they allow us to build bases there and gives us access to their minerals, etc
Sure, you can briefly consider 1-3 for the sake of covering all angles, but dont bother to say them out loud, especially in public!

(706 posts)Someone probably talked to him about all of the resources Greenland has and how it would be great if we controlled it and how bad it would be if say Russia or China did. From there he turned bits and pieces into some kind of insane thing where we have to have it and we will take it.
As you said logically the US having Greenland is a no brainer but that doesn't mean it's possible or logical to do it. Something can be based in fact and still be unrealistic.

(5,604 posts)There is no scenario where this makes a lick of sense. I don't care how strategic it is, this is a fucking stupid thing to even casually consider. IT'S NOT UP FOR THE TAKING. Since when do we go all colonial on our fucking allies??? Or any sovereign nation for that matter? Russia and Israel do stupid shit like this, but I guess I wrongly believed the "enlightened" US was out of its colonization period.

(23,449 posts)Native Americans living on the land and Europeans claimed Greenland in spite of Native Americans/Eskimos living on the land, and both areas of geography ended up having the native people displaced for European gain, yes, trying to buy Greenland is comparable.
But France (Napolean) sold their ill-gotten land in s.e. U.S. to get some money to finance Napolean's European aims. He wasn't interested in developing such a far-off land. Greenland, on the other hand, doesn't want to change hands. Things have changed in 218 years. Does PA want Kuwait to but it?
And finally, what is in the works that we are being diverted from knowing?

At least Manchin was clear he wasn't a Trumper, and WV was way redder than PA.
This stuff simply isn't required for him to win in PA so something else is going on.

This one stood out...she told me that if he had a particularly strong personality trait, one of two things would happen. It would intensify, or completely do a 180 and reverse.
Fetterman's recent comments make me think he did a 180.
