Even after her 2023 diagnosis, Richards had remained a fixture in Democratic politics. In August, she helped cast Texas' ceremonial votes at the Democratic National Convention to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris, and delivered one of the event's speeches focused on reproductive rights.

14. My former best friend worked for her and loved her so much!

The best compliment I received in the past 20 years was from her, she tried to recruit me to come out of retirement and work for Planned Parenthood with her and Cecile. The complement was that I reminded her a lot of Cecile in many ways, including very passionate and committed to liberal causes and women's health!

My BFF died Thanksgiving before last, I will never get over that sadness. she was a sister to me for over 55 years! So sad her mentor is now gone too.

I know what you mean. Last Feb a close friend who I knew for almost 60 years passed. It was a big loss as we shared so many memories together. We had a phone call every week right up to the end. Miss that call.

16. Oh gawd. Today of all days this is beyond wrenching. She appeared on tv interviews through

nearly the end. What strength of purpose! What a role model.

I'm beside myself even though I knew she had a terminal form of brain cancer. May her spirit live in all the women fighting to make things better in this country. I will never forget her, nor her mother who likewise had the force of conviction (and a humorous edge) that gave us all a sense that we could prevail.

Cecile will not be forgotten. That lump in my throat and sense of loss (and what ifs) is evidence of that.
