NJ governor asks Trump to examine Manhattan congestion pricing

Source: The Hill

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) on Monday asked President Trump to examine congestion pricing in Manhattan.

“As you begin your second term as President, I welcome any opportunity to work with you and your Administration where we can find common ground. One area where I believe our priorities align is congestion pricing,” a letter from Murphy reads.

The Democrat told Trump the program did not receive enough federal scrutiny last year.

A congestion pricing plan detailed in spring 2024 would have charged passenger vehicles entering Manhattan below 60th Street $15. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) said in June the plan was delayed, also stating that “a $15 charge may not mean a lot to someone who has the means, but it can break the budget of a working- or middle-class household.”

By discouraging drivers and encouraging mass transit is a win for people's health and the climate.

The State of NY claimed "environmental benefits", but once federally approved the final enabling State Laws have a singular goal of raising really high target revenue amounts. I am biased as I'm barely middle class and live in Midtown Manhattan, we are the most mixed city by usage with commercial and residential of many economic levels all mixed together. Yes up around Central park it is only legacy middle class and the wealthy, but below 34th street it is more diverse. And we have never tried to enforce NYC residents only for the residential parking. I'd rather not have zones with stickers but at least ticket anyone with out of city registrations. But this has become a revenue grab for the most inefficient transit builder, the amounts they spend is beyond compare. Yes part of the costs in NYC is for health coverage and liability but there seems to be graft too.

Nor do they want CT or Long Island cars driving into the city. Just leave those pesky cars home and take the train into town. What's so hard about that?

Chump has nothing to say about it, one way or the other.

It's part of what's dubbed the "Value Pricing Pilot Program".

So a person reporting to a person reporting ... to a person who reports to Trump had to review it and approve it.

Even NY (D) politicians have come out against it.
