Citrus harvest 'virtually halted' as workers fearing Trump order skip work: report

President Donald Trump made major promises during the 2024 campaign to lower the cost of groceries.

However, it appears that the president's executive orders on immigration could be throwing a wrench into any progress being made to lower the cost of food.

NBC Bay Area reports that the citrus harvest in California's Central Valley has been "virtually halted" because migrant farmworkers have skipped work en masse in the wake of Trump's sweeping executive orders cracking down on undocumented immigrants.

The report notes that the timing of Trump's actions has been particularly troublesome for Central Valley farms because it's currently "the peak of citrus harvest season," which means that grocery stores could soon be hit with shortages of fruits such as oranges.

unfortunately the "low/no" salt recipes for making kraut pretty much end up giving you tangy "coleslaw". In fact in Wisconsin we used to say "creamed coleslaw" or "vinegar slaw". Obviously the creamed slaw is sans vinegar at least in my house. I sometimes might use a dab of juice from a jar of sweet pickles. The last time I went to the deli and asked for "vinegar slaw" the young lady had to go ask her manager what that is.

I hate the other stuff even though I like all the ingredients, just not in that form.

46. There's a trick to making good

creamy coleslaw. Too many people bury the slaw in the cream. I know some people that barely put in any seasoning or carrots. You end up with cabbage and mayo basically. Some have it so thin it runs like water off of the slaw. I prefer vinegar slaw also. Vinegar slaw, rye bread and fried fish is the standard Friday night deal.

There is something about the combination that puts me off. I've tried several times, several recipes. Even the ones that will make me a convert! Nope. Never again. It's just one of those things I can't do. Nothing fixes it for me.

I'm the same with hush puppies, falafel and hummus (though I can eat hummus but I rarely do). I love the ingredients and texture isn't an issue but it's just something about the combinations that don't work for me. Lasagna is also very close to the edge for me but I have had lasagna I like; I just don't particularly lean towards it. Mushroom lasagna is very good and I have no problem with the combination. I also have no problem with the combination of the ingredients in traditional lasagna as long as they are not in lasagna form.

It's kooky.

and hummus. I have tried all of them so many times and just can't deal with it and it's strange that I can't deal with hummus because I love good refried beans as long as they're stiff and not runny. I was raised on ham and navy bean soup that was so thick you could stand a fork in it and those beans were no problem. Kidney beans and hummus people can keep for themselves. I don't like kidney beans in my chili either. It may be heresy to some chili lovers but I'm fine with substituting macaroni noodles for kidney beans.

Day before yesterday I 'splurged' and bought 4 Cara Cara oranges. At $1.99/lb it cost me a little over $4 for them. They do run a little more than the regular navels, but those will probably be the last Cara Caras I buy for the foreseeable future!
