Coffee prices surge to record highs above $3.60 per lb

Source: Reuters

January 29, 2025 2:59 PM EST Updated 2 hours ago

NEW YORK, Jan 29 (Reuters) - Global arabica coffee prices hit record highs above $3.60 per lb on Wednesday as Brazil, by far the world's largest producer, has few beans left to sell and as worries over its upcoming harvest persist.

Dealers said 70%-80% of Brazil's current arabica harvest has been sold and new trades are slow. Brazil produces nearly half the world's arabica beans, a high-end variety typically used in roast and ground blends. The country's recent weather has been more favorable after a severe drought last year. Still, the upcoming crop will be 4.4% smaller than the previous, according to Brazilian food supply agency Conab.

"Global coffee supplies remain limited. Vietnam is progressing slowly with sales of its robusta crop. The arabica harvested in Central America and Colombia is taking longer to get to the market, and Brazilian farmers don't show much interest in selling more," said broker HedgePoint Global Markets on Wednesday. Arabica coffee futures on the ICE exchange , a contract used globally to price physical coffee trades, hit a record high of $3.6945 per lb earlier, bringing gains for the year up nearly 15%. The contract later closed up 2.5% at $3.6655 per lb.

Robusta coffee , a generally cheaper variety used mostly to make instant coffee, rose 0.9% at $5,609 a metric ton. Coffee exports from India, the world's fifth largest robusta producer, are expected to decline more than 10% in 2025 due to lower production and reduced carry-forward stocks from last season's crop. Dealers said farmers in both India and Vietnam, the world's top robusta producer, are holding back sales in anticipation of further price gains and that in Brazil, some 80-90% of the current harvest has been sold.

upon the origin, with Kenya and Yemen the most expensive (and with Kenya, highest quality).

My last batch of green beans were in the 6 to 9 dollar per pound range - most that I prefer (Ethiopia, Kenya) in the 8-9+ range.

A 2-3 dollar rise in 18 years - seems expected and not outrageous (I buy from Sweet Maria) and typically keep 10-20 lbs on hand - they keep very well.

Www.sweetmarias.com - and dive in.

I use an old fashioned crank stainless steel popcorn popper over a Coleman stove outdoors - takes 8 min to roast half a pound of green beans.

The initial volley of EOs by this felonious pResident and his henchmen and women will trigger massive disruptions economically, implement illegal prosecutions and detentions and ushere inb totalitarian oppression the likes of which America has alway stood against. We are now a pariah nation domestically and internationally unless we fight back fiercely to cast out these deploreables. Gitmo will become the new Dachau or Treblinka.

Starbucks could be impacted slightly (sarcasm). Another tidbit or two. In 2023, the United States imported around 4.4 million barrels of crude oil per day from Canada, which was about 60% of the country's total crude oil imports. This made Canada the primary source of petroleum for the U.S.
In 2023, Canada's crude oil exports reached a record high of 4 million barrels per day, with the U.S. receiving about 97% of those exports.

Shit's hittin' the fan and flyin' everywhere..
On edit the math may not work out but I just cut and paste.

there were 2 Puerto Ricans in my dorm on my floor who would bring back PR coffee (they called it "mud coffee" ) when we came back after school breaks and would give me a bag and even gave me one of those espresso pots to brew it in. Pot looked this and went on the stove (or in our case a hot plate) -

That stuff got me through MANY all-nighters!!

TB here as well. On road trips, my friends never let me have liquid before we left. They knew we'd be stopping frequently otherwise.

Had to have a scan of my bladder. It involved a whole lot of water. Told the technician we were going to have issues, as I had TB. She didn't understand. Right up until the point where I had to keep heading to the bathroom every 10 minutes.

I don't drink coffee either. I can't stand it. But I do love tea. Drink it infrequently, because TB.

Served me right up thru many a night cramming for college exams. Anyway, get your coffee, because we are in troubled waters in new territory.

Stock up on coffee because the price will be going up. He drinks a couple of cups every morning. (I don't drink it at all, it's tea for me). I don't think he believed me, so imagine I'll be hearing whimpering or cursing from him pretty quick.
