Domino's founder sues feds over health care law
Source: 9News/AP
DETROIT (AP) - The founder of Domino's Pizza is suing the federal government over mandatory contraception coverage in the health care law. Tom Monaghan, a devout Roman Catholic, says contraception isn't health care but a "gravely immoral" practice. He filed a lawsuit Friday in federal court. It also lists as a plaintiff Domino's Farms, a Michigan office park complex that Monaghan owns. Monaghan offers health insurance that excludes contraception and abortion for employees. The new federal law requires employers to offer insurance including contraception coverage or risk fines. Read more: http://www.9news.com/money/305201/344/Dominos-founder-sues-feds-over-health-care-law- Another pizza store to boycott and I have been boycotting Dominos since 1993 ever since they served one to me that wasn't a real pizza but a cardboard type bland crap.

4. getting rich is rarely about being smart.
smart (and otherwise capable) can make you useful to someone else, and therefore can be a big part of getting a nice, comfortable job.
getting super-rich, by contrast requires requires an ability to get smart (and otherwise capable) people to serve you and be willing to let you have the lion's share of the loot. that's a very different talent. |

96. Haven't had Dominos in 35 years but back in college when I was first introduced to it, we called it:
"ketchup on cardboard." It really was that lousy. The one thing it seemed to have going for it was lots of college kids for cheap labor available to deliver it at odd hours. If it's since become a 'quality product' I have to admit I never would have guessed it was possible.

3. Yes, it's "gravely immoral" to prevent women from dying in childbirth
A dear relative of mine has a heart condition and was told that pregnancy and childbirth would be fatal if she were to attempt it. Her doctor sternly recommended that she get her tubes tied, which she did; she and her husband have a very cherished adopted daughter.
So, Mr. Monaghan, should she have died by now? And their pizza sucks. |

10. I've been boycotting Domino's for decades -- since back when Monaghan actually ran the company
... and was using his pizza-gotten gains to support anti-choice causes. He lived in a Catholic orphanage for a while as a child, apparently, and is just extremely Catholic. He sold his controlling interest in Domino's back in the late 1990s -- to BAIN CAPITAL! (he sold his stake in the Detroit Tigers, too), and sold off a lot of his more expensive possessions/real estate to build a Catholic law school and a Catholic university, start anti-poverty programs in Central and South America and start a Catholic mutual fund.
He's done some good with his money; he's also set back the cause of women's reproductive rights -- and, obviously, continues to. |

14. This is easy. There shouldn't be a fine, there should be a fee.
He wants us to police his workers for possibly having birth control and abortion coverage. There should be a fee for that. We can work up a price schedule depending on what kind of insurances for not having these options granted he would prefer for that.
1. Does he want the offending members of his organization reported to him. $10 per month per person. 2. Does he want training for all physicians and responders to review all contracts before they might give out these options. $100 per month. 3. Does he want guards posted at all hospitals to warn other workers to not let these people have certain options. $1,000 per person per month. 4. Does he want guards at all hospitals keeping it from happening by constantly checking what the hospital is doing at any time and stopping it mid-procedure if happening. $10,000 per person per month. Please check one and send in your payments on time. ON EDIT: These prices are subject to change and may depend on size of workforce. |

16. I wish they'd put this level of effort into making sure EVERYONE had health care.
Catholic social teaching is that health care is a right, not a privilege, and so I'm disappointed that over the decades (not merely years, decades) I've seen no sign that the church intends to put their weight behind that view. In fact in one case, Catholic Charities in D.C., couples coverage was eliminated when same-sex marriage was made legal.
Getting back to Domino's specifically, I recall only too well Monaghan's advice that people on limited incomes could easily get by on a diet of dry milk and meal. I wish I were exaggerating, but I'm not. In any event, that gives you some idea where he stands in terms of empathy for his less fortunate brothers and sisters. |

20. Anybody know how to find out it if a local Dominos is owned by a franchisee and not the corporation?
I have a Dominos right around the corner from me, I order there several times due to convenience. I have conceded the fact that this is Miami and you are not going to get Jersey quality pizza so when I want pizza this is out of sheer convenience. It is to the point that I order online and they know my name as when I go to pick it up they see me and know who I am without evening asking me my name for the order.
After this I will not order Dominos anymore and would like to get a chance to write to find out if the store I order from is individually owned. If so I would like to write the owner expressing my opinion and letting them know I will now longer do business with them and why. |

Their cheese is grainy or something. It doesn't have the taste and feel of melted cheese. It makes me wonder if it's real cheese. Second, they're skimpy on their toppings and they charge more than most places.
When they had their guaranteed delivery time, they unleashed a bunch of irresponsible drivers who drove like idiots just so that damned pizza made it to its destination on time. I had some goof turn left in front of me and our cars collided. When we got out of our cars, all he could say was, "Oh shit, I've got to get that pizza delivered." Seriously. |

29. No, moron....
overpopulating the planet with too many people, having children that you cannot support emotionally, financially or practically is immoral.
We are at a point on this planet where we need to do everything we can to slow or stop population growth. There is not enough food, enough potable water, enough housing, jobs, health care, etc. for the billions we have now. I consider the Catholic and Mormon churches with their "have as many as possible" cultures as two of the most immoral forces in our culture. I realize that most American Catholics use birth control as undoubtedly do many Mormons. But the public position of those churches is that sex is great, encouraged if not mandated as long as it is heterosexual, the man is on top and the sole purpose is to make more babies. Most sane American Protestant churches such as mine take a different approach. We celebrate new life as a gift from God but we strongly encourage families to engage in soulful planning. We offer courses in financial planning, family planning (things couples need to think about and plan as they consider establishing a family) and then try to work with families to create environments that are loving and caring. We don't care if a family has one or six children but we consider the birth of each child as something that needs to be carefully planned so that the child, and the family, are positioned for love and, ultimately, success. |

Hey, dumbass Domino's guy? No one is fucking asking you to stop sperm from swimming with your tongue - just your bank account. And unless something really messed up has happened since I was last at the bank, your currency - the same as mine - was embossed with the Great Seal of the United States of America, and not with either God's seal or that of the Vatican. Corporations are not humans and as such should not be able to claim rights, like religious freedom.
Owners of corporations want it both ways. They don't want to be personally liable for actions of the corporation (one of the purposes of forming one), yet they challenge legal requirements of the corporations if their own, individual morals are offended. |

I think not. My family and I have enjoyed some fine pizza from Dominos. We've got a franchise a block away, easy walk. If Dominos wants my business, then he can keep quiet and go public that he's reconsidered his suit. And don't pull a Snyder on us. A Snyder is Quisling of WWII. I don't wish Monaghan or Snyder the same fate of Quisling.

110. I think having sex for the mere pleasure of it is perfectly moral
as long as it's consensual and between adults. How can anyone justify turning physical intimacy, the most compelling definition of PRIVACY, into a political discussion? This is where the entire debate goes off the tracks. They're talking about something that is nobody's business. Contraception is not illegal and neither is sex. Politicians should be protecting our privacy.
They must not remember Woody Allen's brilliant observation. "Sex without love is an empty experience, but as empty experiences go it's one of the best." |

111. Statement from Dominos:
"Earlier this week, news stories came out that Domino's Pizza founder Tom Monaghan had filed suit against the federal government regarding healthcare. Since that time, the story has been widely misreported to indicate Domino's was involved in this action which is completely untrue. Tom Monaghan sold Domino's Pizza in 1998 and today has NO active affiliation with our company. The media often neglect to note this fact. His views are not our views, nor are his actions in any way related to our actions. Domino's Pizza has made no public statements about health care, as we are still waiting to see how the final rules will affect our network of small business owners. Domino's is not a political company; it is not a religious company - we are a pizza company."
I personally love their pizza. It's cheap and good, and I can send to my wife and kids when they are away. |
