Trump pauses tariffs on Canada imports for 30 days after doing the same for Mexico

Source: CNBC

Published Mon, Feb 3 2025 4:41 PM EST Updated 25 Min Ago

President Donald Trump on Monday agreed to pause the implementation of planned U.S. tariffs on imports from Canada for at least 30 days, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.

The pause was announced in a tweet by Trudeau hours after Trump and Mexico’s president said Trump would pause for one month planned tariffs on imports from Mexico. In both cases, the pauses came after those countries agreed to take steps toward preventing the trafficking of the deadly opioid fentanyl into the United States.

Trump on Saturday said he would impose 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada, and 10% tariffs on goods imported from China. Trump had also planned to impose a 10% tariff on energy resources from Canada.

Trudeau on Saturday warned that his country would implement a 25% tariff against $155 billion in U.S. goods in retaliation for Trump’s tariffs.

It seems like banking is the next thing he's going to try to get. Canada has strict banking and bank licensing regulations, so we haven't had the US kind of big bank failures and bailouts.

Imposing tariffs, pausing them, will be such an attention getter. I expect lunatic threats the rest of the time felon traitor is the figurehead. Not just everyone in America, but everyone in the world will have to watch him smear shit on the wall.
Will there be incremental damage? I read that China made a deal with another country to buy soy beans. I read that Doug Ford in Canada will not allow companies in Ontario to make new deals with U.S. companies. (I might not be entirely accurate on the details of the stories) Will actions like these be reversible? Are the tariffs on China and Venezuala still in place? Will traitor felon use tariffs as a cudgel on other countries? Will the EU ally itself with more relaiable and stable trading partners, such as BRICS? Do other countries really want to bob and weave as traitor felon flails his way around the ecomonic arena?
As for the rest of us, try to stock up when the felon is eying other ways to create havoc. I feel little less threatened knowing I have a store of dried goods is a good anti-anxiety remedy.
This is a ridiculous situation.

Don't worry, Canada is ready for tariffs at any instant. Yes, I expect tRump to play it out for a long time. He likes to keep it in the news and seems really determined to bring in tariffs all over the place.

What was agreed to was what Canada began doing in December.

Of course, the Shitgibbon "folded" his cards in Canada as well. The Turd had no choice but to ignominiously fold his tariff bluff cards. So much for his fucked-up economic "tariffs" bluff. Now, the Turd is the laughingstock of the entire world as no one is going to be "bluffed" again by the Turd. Xi and the Chinese Communists are laughing their asses off at the buffoonish Turd. Maybe, China will give him (or his daughter) another meaningless Chinese "copyright" to soothe the Turd's "feelings?"
The Turd's insane economic behavior has now tagged that economic albatross to his face. He now owns whatever happens to the U.S. economy. He can't blame Hillary or Obama or Biden or Kamala anymore -- it's now his untrained and uncontrollable puppy which is now pissing all over the American carpeting. Even his whacko cult now knows, beyond any doubt, that he is the owner of this economic albatross -- and it is going to get worse for him -- a lot fucking worse!

until you got to his cult knowing he is a weak toddler. Oh, no, we have many months left till his cult even begins to grasp who they voted for. Keep in mind that they are getting NO information regarding the responses of Canada and Mexico, his negotiations with them—all they are hearing is that he is their mob boss Dear Leader and Savior and is putting the rest of the world in its place. They don’t know what tariffs are. They have no idea how threatened our economy is. They are wandering around in a fog of Donny fairy dust, thinking that all is well now that their Savior is in place. It will be a long time before they even begin to understand.

Mexico ALREADY surged troops while Biden was in office and Trudeau sent out something on Xitter (it was in the OP article but I didn't include it there or in the OP comments as DU hates them) regarding what their plans were -

Justin Trudeau
@JustinTrudeau
I just had a good call with President Trump. Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border.

In addition, Canada is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl Czar, we will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, launch a Canada- U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering. I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million.

Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together.

border security plan they’d already begun. And according to CBC, “ The prime minister also made a series of new commitments to Trump, including a promise to appoint a new fentanyl "czar." And he promised to list Mexican cartels, one of the top purveyors of fentanyl and other drugs in Canada and the U.S., as terrorists under Canadian law.

Trudeau said Canada is launching a "Canada-U.S. Joint Strike Force," that will be tasked with combatting organized crime and money laundering — and he's kicking in $200 million in funding to get it off the ground.”

So stupid, especially considering less than 100 pounds came in from Canada last year.

They can cut the power to the state of Maine. I think Trudeau is trying to bend a knee to donny just to try to keep the total destruction of their trade and their economy to a minimum. In other words, he is thinking of his people, his citizens, his country, and what is best for them, even if he has to swallow his pride to do it.
