GOP's Susan Collins to back Tulsi Gabbard confirmation
Source: The Hill
Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) announced Monday that she will support Tulsi Gabbard to become director of national intelligence (DNI), giving her a key boost in her confirmation push.
Collins was considered a crucial swing vote on the Senate Intelligence Committee, which is set to meet Tuesday afternoon to potentially advance Gabbard toward a floor vote. Last month, Collins had expressed reservations about Gabbard.

On behalf of cheap lawn chairs everywhere, Im here to tell you that they resent the comparison: Cheap lawn chairs might fold, but theyll at least do their job if just for a little while. Susan Im concerned Collins, on the other hand

(10,688 posts)Sadly there are a lot of voters who generally dont know much about the candidates, so basic name recognition, incumbents typically have that advantage. Also, they have a financial advantage. Those seeking special favors and even just your everyday voters tend to vote for a proven winner.
IMO, she has been wishy-washy for a long time - lots of times she plays the game of voting against her party to gain favor from her constituents - all the while knowing that her vote will not determine the outcome anyway - pure politics.
I suspect that her position on the Senate Intelligence Committee meant that she would not dare to buck the Party.
Disappointing but the real world.

(28,698 posts)I week or so ago the betting odds implied a greater than 50% chance that her nomination would fail... which necessarily means that they expected four or more republicans to vote against her... and a greater than 90% of losing at least one republican.
Any list of likely defections had to include Collins at or near the top. So yes - it was not expected just a few days ago. Which is why her concerned falling in line so dramatically changed the odds to a near-certainty
