Trump and Musk demand termination of federal office leases through General Services Administration
Source: AP News via Yahoo Finance
One of the next moves in President Donald Trump and Elon Musk's sweeping effort to fire government employees and curtail operations is using the agency that manages thousands of federal employee worksites around the country to cut down on office space.
Last week, regional managers for the General Services Administration, or GSA, received a message from the agency's Washington headquarters to begin terminating leases on all of the roughly 7,500 federal offices nationwide, according to an email shared with The Associated Press by a GSA employee.
The order seems to contradict Trumps own return-to-office mandate for federal employees, adding confusion to what was already a scramble by the GSA to find workspace, internet connections and office building security credentials for employees who had been working remotely for years.
But it may reflect the Trump administration's belief that it won't need as many offices due to its efforts to fire employees or encourage them to resign.

(130,472 posts)but they're getting rid of the offices. Is not having office space just an excuse to fire more employees?

(687 posts)He is following what he did at Twitter perfectly. If you want to know his next move just look at what he did there. First he demanded everyone come back, then he told everyone if they didn't come back they would be fired. Next he made the ones that stayed defend their performance/jobs. The ones that took his buyout offer had to actually sue him to get the money BTW.
After he got rid of the people he didn't think he needed he started letting stuff break to see if anyone noticed. If they didn't then he just left it broken/off. At some point in all of this mess he told his landlords he was cancelling all of the leases and stopped paying them. He also stopped paying other contracts he didn't feel were needed.
He might think out of the box with rockets and cars (kind of) but when it comes to trying to save money and breaking an organization he has one playbook.

(2,702 posts)They have due process rights like most if not all public employees.
Just because he fired people at Twitter doesn't mean he can do it with federal employees. Besides, he has no authority to do it.
Neither does Trump.

(3,060 posts)Step 1) Force workers to come back to the office.
Step 2) Get rid of current office spaces
Step 3) Lease/buy new office space at inflated prices from Trump family and cronies.

(374 posts)Does Musk have a tip line for suggestions on ways to save money? I would suggest starting with elimination of the penny.
