GOP Questions Trump's Gaza Plan: 'I Thought We Voted For America First'
Source: HuffPost
President Donald Trumps far-fetched proposal that the U.S. take ownership of the Gaza Strip and redevelop it into the Riviera of the Middle East befuddled some Republicans, who noted it would contradict what he campaigned on.
The pursuit for peace should be that of the Israelis and the Palestinians, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) wrote in a post on Wednesday. I thought we voted for America First. We have no business contemplating yet another occupation to doom our treasure and spill our soldiers blood.
Paul had responded to a post from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who suggested he agreed with Trump. Make Gaza Beautiful Again, Rubio said.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), a foreign policy hawk who rarely agrees with libertarian-leaning senators like Paul, also called the proposal problematic.

Plus, now we can look forward to the hatred felt toward Israel being directed toward U.S. soldiers and the U.S..

(100,133 posts)However havent you noticed that he repeats whatever it was, with embellishments, later on. By the time he says it a third time, the wheels are in motion.
This is not the first time hes indicated a desire to see Gaza be beautiful and be developed but too bad so sad it is currently a pile of rubble and the people would be so much better off if they were all in Egypt or Saudi Arabia, which countries emphatically do not want them and never have.
Notice trump used the language of real estate developers who are looking to make a fortune for themselves. Take him seriously.
Oh, and did you hear trump say something how boundaries need to be changed while Netanyahu stood there with a small smile in his face like the cat that ate the canary. Thats a shout-out to trumps Ambassador Mike Huckabee & the American Evangelicals, because they & preacher Huck are preacher praying for the Second Coming, and to that small faction of the Israeli population who are Ultra-Orthodox and praying for the First Coming. Neither Netanyahu nor trump are believers like that, but
In any case, trump never jokes. He has no sense of humor.

You are absolutely right that he has zero sense of humor. His jokes are usually made in the mind of a bully. They are either meant to demean or steal.

58,000 young Americans died trying to change Vietnam. Is that his plan? Send U.S. troops to guard his Riviera of the Middle East
If Baron Trump doesn't put on a military uniform, pick up a gun and stand a post in Gaza. Why should OUR sons and daughters?
Let's look at his cabinet members. One has nine kids, and only one should be exempt. The Speaker of the House... his kids should suit up and arm up and go as well. Let's go down the list: Health, AG, Military, etc. All of their sons and daughters.
There should be NO bone spurs exemptions for anyone who supports this crazy person in the White House and his band of sycophants.

Nearly six years later, the assessment continues to ring true. Take the presidents plan Im using the word loosely to acquire the Gaza Strip......
As for how, exactly, the president arrived at this idea, The New York Times reported that Trump shocked even senior members of his own White House on Tuesday afternoon:
[P]rivately, Mr. Trump had been talking about U.S. ownership of the enclave for weeks. And his thinking had accelerated, according to two administration officials, after his Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, returned from Gaza last week and described the horrific conditions there.
While his announcement looked formal and thought-out he read the plan from a sheet of paper his administration had not done even the most basic planning to examine the feasibility of the idea, according to four people with knowledge of the discussions, who were not authorized to speak publicly.
In a normal, functioning U.S. administration, such a monumental decision would go through months of intense scrutiny, led by experienced national security and diplomatic officials. There would be working groups. And negotiations. And detailed analyses on costs and consequences......
The day after the rollout of the plan, administration officials couldnt answer the questions because there were no such answers. All they had were some poorly thought-out rhetoric that their boss blurted out, to the consternation of much of the planet.
After a day of confusion at the White House, Trump apparently thought he could help clear things up with a 107-word missive published to his social media platform. In it, the Republican said Gaza would be turned over to the United States, and Palestinians would be resettled in some other countries that he didnt identify.
He went on to say that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who is Jewish, is a Palestinian a label Trump has long used as a slur before concluding that Trump doesnt believe U.S. troops will be needed as part of this endeavor because ... well, he never actually got around to saying why not.
All of which is to say, Trump created an avoidable international incident on Tuesday, only to make matters worse soon after.

For good measure, the Republican added that nobody is going to question U.S. ownership of Gaza because ... well, he never quite got around to explaining why.
Just as importantly, as experts in international law continue to explain that his plan is illegal, Trump was asked how the United States could legally claim Palestinian territory as its own. The president cited U.S. authority.

Its a colonizing perspective rooted in the idea that if the United States wants foreign territory, it should take the foreign territory because the United States wants it.
To reiterate a point from last week, if you voted for Trump because you expected foreign policy restraint, I have some awful news for you.
