Thousands protest Trump administration policies in cities across the US
Source: AP
A movement to protest the early actions of President Donald Trumps administration took off Wednesday, as thousands of demonstrators gathered outside a federal courthouse in Philadelphia and at state capitols in Michigan, Texas, Wisconsin and Indiana.
Protesters waved signs decrying Trump; billionaire Elon Musk, the leader of Trumps new Department of Government Efficiency; and Project 2025, a hard-right playbook for American government and society.
Democracy is not a spectator sport! Do something, said a sign held aloft by one demonstrator in Philadelphia.
The protests were a result of a movement that has organized online under the hashtags #buildtheresistance and #50501, which stands for 50 protests, 50 states, one day. Websites and accounts across social media issued calls for action, with messages such as reject fascism and defend our democracy.

(6,267 posts)It was great! There were colorful and witty signs, and lots of passionate people singing and shouting and making impromptu speeches. There was venting, of course, as well as some good suggestions for more individual and collective action. The trans woman who spoke and made a plea for small acts of kindness was very moving. The crowd could not have been more supportive.
If the trolls had been less effective it would have been better attended, but they sure as heck didnt stop it. It was wonderful to be there.

(41,631 posts)It was cold and windy, but I was happy to see how many young-ish people were there.
Lots of passing cars and trucks honking in solidarity too.
Edit to add photo of my 2 sisters who came with me. We're standing in the back on the edge of the crowd at the Federal Building in downtown Pittsburgh. (It's on a busy intersection, lots of traffic passing by.) The building in the background is the old train station, which is now an office building. At the protest there were perhaps 150 people, maybe a few more. I saw a camera guy from WPXI the NBC local affiliate.

(26,856 posts)I remember that train station, I took a photo of it. I was going cross country to the SW, then California by bus. Waaay back in '79.
Pittsburg was a lunch stop. 👍

(11,306 posts)Although this IS the state Capital, there was also one held in Wilmington which probably drew larger crowds. I'd say maybe 100-125 people at its peak showed up in Dover but they were fed up, fired up and mad as Hell. My kind of people.

(41,631 posts)We were freezing our butts off in Pittsburgh and I'm sure it affected the turnout. If the weather had been a little nicer we would have gotten at least 500 or more at our downtown Pittsburgh protest. (Everyone votes D in Pittsburgh.)

Demonstrators have gathered in downtown Austin to speak out against President Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration and other actions he's taken since entering the White House for a second term. FOX 7 Austin's Angela Shen has a look.

(58,283 posts)Rachel said the Sacto protest was massive and she showed an aerial view of the Capitol steps with a huge crowd, with the crowd extending out into the trees. I'd love to see your picks.

(977 posts)Hubby, duer lame54 and I got there around 11am and stayed til 2pm.
Was so happy to see a lot of young people attending.
Looked like at least two thousand protesters.
Didn't see a single counter protester.
At one point someone came out of the Capitol and held up a paper with "fuck trump" on it. We had been chanting that earlier.
