Texas Measles Cases Hit Double Digits as Outbreak Continues to Raise Alarm

Source: Newsweek

Published Feb 08, 2025 at 6:14 PM EST

An outbreak of measles cases in Texas has hit double digits prompting the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) to issue an alert on Friday. Newsweek has contacted the Texas Department of State Health Services via email for comment on Saturday afternoon.

Why It Matters

Measles, an airborne disease, is an extremely infectious illness that can be especially dangerous for infants, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems, with the potential to cause serious and even deathly complications. It can spread rapidly in communities with low vaccination rates, and initially results in symptoms including a high fever, a cough, a runny nose, and red or watery eyes, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Initial signs of the illness include flu-like traits, but can escalate into a distinctive red, blotchy rash that is highly infectious to those that haven't been vaccinated. According to the CDC, nearly 1 to 3 of every 1,000 children who become infected with measles will die from respiratory and neurologic complications.

According to The Texas Tribute, for some communities in Texas, these are the first cases of measles in more than 20 years.

Unvaccinated adult males (“pitchers” for any lurking MAGAts) should be very very worried about catching the mumps. You’ll go through some things and it doesn’t check your party affiliation.

But, you will no longer be able to look it up at the CDC or NIH.

Excruciating doesn’t begin to describe it. It’s more like the Goddess Herself is kicking you in the gonads (that’s “nuts” for the lurking MAGAts)… For days. What’s more, the more manly man someone is, the worse it gets.

I can imagine how they might be begging for some “toxic femininity” if they think it might help.

fully vaccinated. I wasn’t, due to mumps vaccine not available when I was a child (I was born in 1956) so I was revaccinated with the MMR. Never had mumps or measles.

Glad I am revaxxed.

I don't remember mumps, but my case of measles
was very mild.

However, my little sister got sleeping sickness after
she had the measles. She did finally get over it,
though.

I can definitely see the need for vaccines.

I vaguely remember getting some kind of tb test. And a smallpox vaccination that never "took."

We were on vacation when I had mumps. Measles were awful. I got really sick. I don't remember chickenpox much. I was pretty little and got it from our nextdoor neighbor.

The girls behind us had whooping cough.

I wouldn't be surprised if they use this measles outbreak to do so, claiming it was brought in by illegal immigrants.

Inside Trump’s Search for a Health Threat to Justify His Immigration Crackdown

President-elect Donald J. Trump’s advisers have spent months trying to identify a disease that will help them build their case for closing the border.
