Venting at Democrats and Fearing Trump, Liberal Donors Pull Back Cash
Source: New York Times
While Mr. Trump has not taken action against any liberal groups or lawmakers, Democrats worry his frequent threats of retribution during the campaign have led to a chilling effect on the charitable foundations and nonprofit advocacy groups that have long been pillars of the countrys civil society.
...
Much of the concern centers on legislation in Congress that would remove the tax-exempt status of nonprofit groups that are found to be supporting terrorist organizations.
After Mr. Trump won the election, the Democracy Alliance urged its donors to lobby against the bill during the lame-duck session, fearing it could be weaponized against progressive groups and could even be used to shutter ActBlue, the online fund-raising platform.
During a presentation to Democracy Alliance donors, former Representative Donna Edwards, a Maryland Democrat, flashed a slide showing all Democratic members of Congress who had cast yes or absent votes for the measure in the past. She encouraged donors to push them to change their positions. The bill passed the House last year but died in the Senate. Democrats worry that Republicans, who now fully control Congress, could pass the bill into law.

This is very different from 2017, when people were donating big to progressive causes, resulting in Democrats taking back the White House and Congress in 2020. People weren't afraid of Trump back then. They are now. That needs to change. If you don't have money, at least put on some comfortable shoes and join the many protests popping up. This will give donors and our representatives a spine too. As Timothy Snider instructs, do not comply in advance. https://timothysnyder.org/on-tyranny

(34,301 posts)I kinda doubt "the fear aspect".
Seriously what is Trump gonna do?
Tech was a big pusher behind dumping Biden. We should have just cut our losses and not played games.

I agree with your that tech was behind dumping Biden.
But I do think that donors large and small are utterly fed up with all sorts of things. Including the way that the D's never once called for one counting of ballot's anywhere. Trying to model the "statesmanship" they wish politicians would exemplify - while the R's all remain hell bent on taking down the Federal Government. And in such a short time have pretty much succeeded.

(34,301 posts)I never heard anyone in tech ask for a recount. What is he going to do? Google has rolled over for him.........Apple has rolled over for him...What is Trump gonna do for them?
What harm would Trump due to a retailer like Target? Or Lowes?
They explicitly said, "Kamala raised billions and had nothing to show for it". We should have just stuck with Biden. Never once did I hear anyone from tech or billionaires request a recount. Greg Palast doesn't count.

(2,904 posts)I'm being dramatic, but Kamala was our best shot. We should have done an open primary, but that is for another discussion.

Now that the campaign is over they are ok venting.
