A Delta Air Lines plane has crashed while landing at an airport in Toronto and is pictured upside down on the runway. Shocking images show the plane having apparently flipped with emergency crews at the scene at Toronto Pearson Airport. The plane was arriving at the Canadian city from Minneapolis when the accident happened in wintry conditions with blizzard conditions on the ground.
One of the passengers speaking of the incident on Facebook said: In Toronto just landed our plane crashed its upside down. He was talking as he appeared to be filming from the runway and looking at the plane as people were being helped to safety in the snow and ice. He added: "It's upside down everybody.... most people appear to be okay believe it or not."
Peel Paramedic Services say at least eight people are injured following an incident with a plane. There were reportedly close to 80 people on board. A local journalist wrote on X: Its bad at the airport. Fire and police everywhere!"
But it appears that while the footage from the scene has led to fears of a deadly crash, that somehow everyone has been "accounted for", said the airport. "Toronto Pearson is aware of an incident upon landing involving a Delta Airlines plane arriving from Minneapolis. Emergency teams are responding. All passengers and crew are accounted for," stated a spokesperson for the airport.

(26,507 posts)The next post said this happened in Canada.
Almost like that should absolve Tr**p for the firings.
I simply restated that the flight took off from Minneapolis in the U.S..
Just to point out that the FAA and ultimately the NTSB will have some responsibility in the investigation of this crash.
This is another crash in a short period of time since Tr**p took office.
I Guess he's just lucky that way (sarcasm).

(8,893 posts)I have a lot to get irritated about with him. I'm not going to get irritated about a bad landing in a blizzard in another country and just wasn't sure the poster had noticed it was in Canada. That is why I replied--to them.

(22,695 posts)Post 5 implied there was a connection however the FAA has nothing to do with the operations of Canadian airports. Stating that fact is in no way of absolving Trump from anything.

(9,787 posts)conditions on the ground caused that plane to flip upside down while landing at Toronto's Pearson.
Yes, it is THAT windy 'n cold mid-February there sometimes, and polar-vortex deformations occur due to weakening in the north-pole jet stream high-altitude's winds.
It's been minus 40 degrees Celcius in Regina this morning... wind shield = -1,000...

(130,537 posts)Can't put this one on Trump's ATC cuts. It's too soon to assign blame but I have to wonder whether the pilots were given sufficient warnings from Toronto ATC about the winds and the runway condition.

(97,630 posts)If one wing is missing, its going to have a tendency to roll over, he said. Those are going to be central questions as to what happened to the wing and the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder. They will be found, if not today, tomorrow, and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada will read them out and they will have a very good understanding of what actually occurred here.
Yikes.

(1,487 posts)Aviation expert said the cross winds were 25knots with gusts to 32 knots, the expert speculated the plane may have had a landing gear failure with a simultaneity receiving a cross gust... if it happened upon landing @ 150 mph, the damage would have been far more severe, again very early speculation with very little information available, just video post crash. Only other thing was the emergency slides don't work when the plane is upside down as the come from the bottom of the doors.

(17,506 posts)as the picture shows.
I guess the speculation is that one of the main landing gears failed, the wing on that side tipped down and a very strong wind gust caught under the other wing and flipped the plane.

(1,487 posts)A Facebook user who said he was a passenger on the flight, John Nelson, posted a video showing the crashed plane and wrote: Our plane crashed. Its upside down. Most people appear to be OK. Were all getting off.
Nelson later told CNN there was no indication of anything unusual before landing. We hit the ground, and we were sideways, and then we were upside down.
I was able to just unbuckle and sort of fall and push myself to the ground. And then some people were kind of hanging and needed some help being helped down, and others were able to get down on their own.
Todd Aitken, the airports fire chief, said: Its very early on. Its really important that we do not speculate. What we can say is the runway was dry and there was no crosswind conditions.

(17,506 posts)Maybe something to do with the main landing gear or a tire, but I think that would just produce a plane landing on its belly and a lot of sparks from one of the engines dragging on the runway.
Losing the hydraulics controlling the one of the speed brake flaps on the wings would probably cause the plane to go sideways upon landing. It's still going pretty fast and now one wing is slowing while the other isn't.

(1,487 posts)I wonder when the plane went sideways if the tail hit a snow bank that hadn't been removed. The city of Toronto said it will takes weeks to clean the accumulated snow from the streets. Malton where the airport is, is miles north of the city. I've flown in & out of that airport many times in the winter & even with my 71 year old memory I've never noticed snow banks in Toronto, Montreal or many other Canadian airports. I've watched them clear the runways, they use huge plows on front end loaders, sweepers, and large snow blowing machines. Just saw video of the plane landing...all the videos I've seen is with the plant stationary, post crash. Hopefully this new video will answer some questions to the why.

(17,506 posts)the left main landing gear might not be completely down. Plane was noticably listing to the right. I thought there is a warning in the cockpit when a landing gear does not come down or deploy correctly, though.
OneBlueDotS-Carolina
(1,487 posts)3 green lights on the control panel, indicating the front & rear landing gear is down & locked, if one of the wheels was not down & locked, the indicator would show red, under such circumstances the pilot would abort the landing & notify the air traffic controllers of the situation. Then they would retract the landing gear & try to drop the gear to get 3 green lights. If they didn't get the desired result, they would declare an emergency, waiting for the ATC to advise as to the next move. This would include flying by the control tower to see if the landing gear is down, that is in the case of a signal malfunction, then passengers on board & how much fuel is left. they may have to fly south to dump fuel over Lake Ontario, while the airport prepares for an emergency landing. This is a situation all parties practice over & over again, thus it's not an extraordinary situation to pilots & those on the ground.
I know, too much info

(4,848 posts)One wing is missing and the other is heavily damaged. The runway condition probably contributed heavily to the mishap and also played a part in avoiding a fire.
It also looks like it happened well below landing speed, which contributed to the fuselage staying in one piece. Prayers for everyone and especially the injured.
This could have been much, much worse.
