Elon Musk backs US withdrawal from NATO alliance
Source: ukdefencejournal.org.uk
Elon Musk, a key figure in President Donald Trumps administration and head of the United States Department of Government Efficiency, has backed calls for the United States to leave the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).
Musk voiced his support on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday night when he responded I agree to a post stating, Its time to leave NATO and the UN. His endorsement aligns with growing calls from some Republican lawmakers, including Senator Mike Lee, to reconsider the US commitment to the alliance.
Lee, a long-time critic of NATO, has described it as a Cold War relic and argued that the alliance has to come to a halt. He claims NATO is a great deal for Europe but a raw deal for America, suggesting that US resources are being stretched to protect Europe while offering little direct benefit to American security.
Musks comments come amid broader discussions within the Trump administration over the future of Americas role in NATO and international alliances. While Trump has not explicitly stated his intent to withdraw from NATO, he has repeatedly pressured European nations to increase their defence spending, warning that the US should not bear the financial burden of the alliance alone.

These idiots are setting the stage for that scenario. If you have kids/grandkids do everything you can to keep them out of the military while Trump is in office. He'll eventually waste lives on some ridiculous ego driven military adventure.

(13,292 posts)That would be consistent with Felon47's view of the universe, where only he knows everything and everyone else is "less than."
His tirade Friday was triggered by Zelinski telling him no. "Ukraine attacked Russia." "No." "You've never said thank you." "No." "You don't want peace." "No." "You want to cause World War Three." "No." "You re disrespecting the United States." "No." "YOU WILL BEND TO MY WILL!" "No."
European leaders are meeting this week to formulate a world in which the United States is no longer viewed as the shining example of democracy, the country that everyone turns to for strength and stability. The United States will still have a seat at the table -- but it will be at the children's table, where T***p and his minions will make lots of noise and play with their food while the adults are having meaningful discussions.
The fiasco with Zelensky was not so much an "emperor has no clothes" revelation as "who invited Drunk Uncle and his yappy dog to Thanksgiving dinner?"

(4,094 posts)I have always said it, evil people are not incompetent, they are incredibly good at destroying, they work hard, they are just evil, but they are not stupid, they just do stupid things very well, they know where they are going and good people don't realize it, don't believe it, and thus they don't commit fast enough to stop them until it is late, because once these evil people take over? its very hard to bring them down.
My biggest concern right now is the idleness, the silence of the intelligent agencies, the military, why is it that we are not hearing from them? They are supposed to defend the country against foreign and domestic enemies, why are they so silent? Why are they allowing an apartheid foreigner to destroy the country? Why are they allowing a Russian agent, pretending to be president, to destroy what took 250 years to build?
Think about it, it took 250 years to build the USA Democracy, not perfect but damn good, and these people will destroy it in a year, or less. It takes 20 years to build a skyscraper (the Twin Towers), it took only one day to destroy them and kill 3,000 people in the process. The killing, this time around, is going to be massive. trump already killed thousands of people during COVID by not doing what a leader should have done, this time around it will be more deliberate, and the numbers will be much higher.
Justice matters.

(4,109 posts)is going to loose a lot of $ if we decide to NATO. If the European Union starts financing their own weapons systems, will the US defense industry be able to find other buyers?
I guess it's time for me to start looking into investing in overseas companies. Our America first policy is going to quickly cause our former allies to stop dealing with US businesses IMHO.
drray23
(8,759 posts)With the exception of a few countries who are using f16's the vast majority of the European weaponry is European made. There are many fighting platforms ranging from planes ( french raffale, eurofighter typhoon,Saab gripen, etc..). Same is true for tanks , missiles, ground systems, etc.. France for example does not use anything US made.
If NATO was dismantled the EU mic would ramp up. It has increased 60 % in the past 5 years and is now roughly half that of the us with most countries only contributing 2 % of their gdp. If they ramp it up to 4 ( the us number) it would more than double it.
I have an OP on this that I posted a few days ago .

(4,109 posts)The only way for folks to see how damaging Republican and Trump policies truly are is if they lose money (and are directly confronted with who was responsible for them losing money, which is sometimes hard to do given the current state of the M$M).

(697 posts)The entire value of the US dollar is due to the global order our alliances produced and the resulting status of the dollar as reserve currency.
Their policies would eliminate that status and send the value of the dollar plunging 90% or more within a very short time.
That is exactly what would happen

The US has always broken its treaties, pacts and promises. Unreliability about treaties is an old US tradition. It starts with the countrys creation: hundreds of treaties signed with Native American tribes that were broken.
I hope that we don't throw our European allies under the bus, but it would not surprise me.

Our position as the linchpin member of NATO is essentially over anyway. Trump may not be able to unilaterally withdraw from the treaty, but I doubt there is a European leader today who believes that he would honor Article 5.

(60,186 posts)Maybe Musk would like to take the USA out of North America altogether. Just declare the USA to be its own continent (make Rand McNally go back and change the maps again), and tell Canada and Mexico we dont want to be part of the same continent they are on any more. Since the Rio Grande wouldnt be the border between the USA and Mexico any more, Trump would issue an executive order re-naming it the Rio Pequeño.
