Live updates: Murphy calls his Rubio confirmation vote 'a mistake'

Source: The Hill

President Trump’s public debacle with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky halted hopes for a signed minerals agreement while dividing the world — and Washington — over their support for them both.

Long-simmering tensions between Trump and Zelensky exploded into the open during a heated Oval Office exchange that will have ramifications for the U.S., Russia, Ukraine and all of Europe.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) called his vote to confirm Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was in that meeting with Trump and Zelensky, “a mistake” in a Sunday interview with CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“It was a mistake. I think a lot of us thought that Marco Rubio was going to stand up to Donald Trump on an issue like this,” said Murphy.

Take off your rose colored glasses. It doesn't do any good to see a silk purse when it is only a pig's ear and doesn't know how to be any other thing.

You are welcome to see your idealism as a distant goal, but right now, you are in a battle where your enemies will put a shiv in your belly and laugh as your guts spill out.

They are the bad guys. They aren't anything else and won't be anything else. Resist!

Rough situation, changing scenario. Rubio was not this man earlier, to my sorrow. I always thought he was an opportunist; maybe that is assumed.

(Little Marco) Instead of standing up to felon, rubio caved. Not only caved, but joined the dark side. I can't imagine anyone with courage and self-respect acting like this. I didn't see rubio make any progress in growing a spine.

I can't respect any person who sacrifices his honor-- for what? He will never realize the visions in his head.

Senator and presumably a educated man who somehow became completely stupid for just a minute. A blind uneducated man could see what was going to happen. Every one of trumps appointees lied during their confirmation hearing. Every one.

just because, no matter the consequences is good strategy. There's a reason that never happens in either party - that is not their job. I'm sure these critics can cite every single vote each Democrat took in Trump's first term and believe anyone that didn't vote against everyone should have been primaried and removed. I would guess they also think most Republicans voted against ALL of Obama's and Biden's nominees. They'd be shocked to learn the truth in both cases.

I choose to be very happy that every Democrat has made ALL the correct votes in every situation where it mattered.

Whether rubio would have garnered enough votes without the Dems, the Dems should have known better. MUCH better. And has Scrivener said, a unified voice is important against a coup.
