Boehner proposes short-term tax fix; Democrats say no

House Speaker John Boehner on Tuesday proposed letting tax rates go up on income above $1 million as a short-term step to avoid some of the fiscal cliff while continuing to negotiate a broader deal with President Barack Obama.

The White House and Democratic leaders immediately rejected Boehner's move, saying the focus of the incremental negotiations should be a comprehensive deficit-reduction agreement.

The back-and-forth in the halls of Congress came two weeks from the end of the year, when automatic tax hikes and spending cuts of the fiscal cliff will take effect.

At a news conference after meeting with House members Tuesday, Boehner called his new proposal a "Plan B" to avoid tax rates rising on everyone next year as part of the fiscal cliff.

It can't be. Raising the rate to 39.4% on taxable income above $1,000,000 would raise about $11 billion in new taxes. The government currently incurs about $3.5 billion per day in deficits. So we're going to increase taxes enough to fund the government FOR 4 DAYS?

4. Boehner Needs To Resign As Speaker

He is letting his ambition cloud his thinking. Anything to get past that January 2nd election for Speaker. This proposal would basically take us over the cliff only to be addressed by the new Congress. That is a laughable proposal. If he can't get the job done he needs to step aside. Besides, I'm not sure why Republicans would want to elect the worst Speaker ever for another term. But then I have previously speculated that Boehner will not be in Congress when the 2014 elections roll around as he is that bad at his job.
