Plane crashes into residential area in Pennsylvania

Source: NBC

Emergency crews responded to the site of a plane crash in a residential area in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on Sunday afternoon.

Online images of the crash, verified by NBC News, show the tail of a plane in a parking lot while the rest of the aircraft is engulfed in flames. Firefighters managed to extinguish the flames, but at least two vehicles were damaged by the blaze.

Officials did not immediately respond to questions about number of injuries. Five people were on board, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The crash happened in the parking area at Brethren Village, a retirement community located less than a mile away from Lancaster Airport.

Private plane carrying 5 people went down pretty soon after takeoff. It sounds like a mechanical difficulty of some kind, but I'm just guessing. No word yet on whether anyone made it out of the plane. "Several survivors" might mean people on the ground.

But the NTSB will leave no stone unturned in determining the cause.

Takeoffs are the riskiest. Maximum weight (aircraft+passengers+fuel) and maximum power. If something goes wrong, there isn't a whole lot of time to get things sorted out.

This guy gives a great explanation and lesson on it. Its one of the most common causes of GA inflight accidents right after take off as you describe.

one of the things we trained for was a broken tow rope on takeoff. The rule of thumb was that if under 200 feet above ground level, your options are severely limited, and you should prepare to land more or less straight ahead. Above 200 feet, you have the option to do the 180 degree turn and land back on the field. Just about every glider biennial flight review I've had included a simulated rope break on takeoff-the instructor pulls the tow rope release. Of course, gliders don't sink as fast as the usual powered aircraft, so it's not as hairy as it sounds.

and the trope that every aviation accident is due to firing ATC staff is played out. Airplanes crash. A lot. Especially in General Aviation. The media is just over-reporting stuff now because they know you will click.

It had just taken off. ATC is mainly to stop planes from running into each other and keep traffic flowing. Private pilots are entirely capable of screwing up on their own.

This was a Beechcraft A35 Bonanza. They were, and perhaps still are, known as “doctor killers.” They are a high performance general aviation single engine prop plane.

If I had to guess, I’d say engine failure on takeoff is most likely as the weather was good.

They went down very close to an airport. It will take some time for the NTSB to do their investigation. Very sad,

It seems like more because of a media "herd mentality" that results in aviation accidents that wouldn't have received national coverage a year ago now get coverage because they occurred in the wake of a major fatal commercial airline crash.

I'm so glad we have a well funded Federal Aviation Administration.
