US Republican lawmakers voice alarm over possible Pentagon command shake-up

WASHINGTON, March 19 (Reuters) - The top two Republican lawmakers who lead the Pentagon's oversight committees in the U.S. Congress issued a rare, joint statement on Wednesday expressing alarm about a potential shake-up in U.S. military commands by the Trump administration.
The statement from the offices of Senator Roger Wicker and Representative Mike Rogers cited press reports, including that the Trump administration is weighing relinquishing the U.S. role as NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe.
The position, which oversees all NATO operations in Europe, has been filled by a four-star U.S. general since its creation in 1950. Sources familiar with the matter tell Reuters such a possibility has been discussed but may ultimately not be viable and that no announcement is imminent.
"We will not accept significant changes to our warfighting structure that are made without a rigorous interagency process, coordination with combatant commanders and the Joint Staff, and collaboration with Congress," Wicker and Rogers said in the statement. "Such moves risk undermining American deterrence around the globe and detracting from our negotiating positions with America's adversaries."

(12,565 posts)Trump and his minions probably also worry about this and thus need to get rid of anyone who supports the Constitution and not a lawless president. Relinquishing the NATO command may be the first step to illegally pulling out of NATO to support Putin. Hegseth will do anything Trump tells him to do because he was selected for subservience to Trump, not competence. Well be seeing more military leaders stripped of their jobs.

(3,693 posts)At best we could see a revolt of senior officers against mistreatment of other senior officers and disregard for military protocol and tradition. It has been hard for me to believe that a roomful of three- and four-star officers are continuing to sit through the abuse I know is coming at them from a draft dodger and his drunken defense secretary (a National Guard major). Trump might just go off on the wrong four-star at the wrong time, and then all bets might be off.
But to expect the military to rise and overthrow Trump to save the Judiciary and Social Security, is really wishful thinking I am afraid.

(337 posts)that unlike other dictatorships around the world, Americans have millions of guns. When Trump starts jailing Democrats in Congress, journalists and judges, that will be the next step. Then, the only step left will be the outright killing of people.

Cowardice is a prime requirement to be a Republican legislator.
After all, it's far more important to keep your job than to stand up for your country.

(78 posts)If you gut your officer corps and replace them with Trump loyalists, military effectiveness will suffer accordingly.
Just ask the ghost of Joe Stalin. In 1936 the Red Army was the largest and most powerful in the world. In 1937-38 Stalin purged the officer corps, including two-thirds of the generals. In June 1941 the Nazis absolutely rolled over the Red Army. In November 1942, the Red Army had just barely rebuilt the basic level of tactical ability to conduct a counterattack - after 18 months, 1800 km of retreat, 10 million military casualties, and loss of more than 30,000 aircraft and 40,000 tanks.
The quality of your officers matters a great deal, and no, you can't just fake it like Trump and Musk have been doing.
