'Don't be sad': Alabama father detained by ICE while his 4-year-old battles leukemia

Source: AL.com

A man whose 4-year-old daughter is battling leukemia was detained by immigration officials in Birmingham last week.

“It was hard witnessing their last goodbye perhaps for their lives,” said attorney Kimberly Fasking, who represents the man and his wife. They came to the United States six years ago from Guatemala. She said their daughter is a U.S. citizen.

The man and his wife came to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Birmingham July 16 for a regular check in, Fasking said. They live in the Birmingham area.

The man has no criminal record, according to his attorney, and is one of many people being detained at what used to be routine meetings. He is temporarily being held in an Alabama facility while awaiting transfer to a facility in Louisiana. He likely will be deported back to Guatemala.
