Trump says surprise rebate checks could be coming thanks to tariff revenue

Source: Staten Island Advance/SiLive

Published: Jul. 25, 2025, 6:45 p.m.

President Donald Trump’s on Friday said that he’s considering issuing rebate checks to Americans that would be paid out of the revenue generated by increased tariffs on other countries, CBS News reported. “We’re thinking about a little rebate. But the big thing we want to do is pay down debt. But we’re thinking about a rebate,” Trump told reporters before leaving for a four-day visit to Scotland.

The president said that the rebate could be “for people of a certain income level,” but he didn’t specify what income threshold he’s considering. The federal government has collected about $100 billion in tariff revenue since the Trump administration instituted its higher import duties earlier this year.

That figure could increase to about $300 billion per year, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox Business’ “Mornings with Maria” earlier this week. It’s not the first time that Trump in his second White House term has pitched the idea of issuing rebate checks to Americans.

The president in February said that he was looking at using 20% of the savings from Elon Musk’s cost-cutting task force, the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, to provide direct payments to taxpayers. Those checks have not materialized, with House Republicans saying that they were concerned that such payments could increase the national deficit.

Back in my working days I was always surprised how much employee loyalty a few free meals would buy & that it made up for the 2% raise we all got the same year the company reported great profits. Working as an executive assistant for a few years was one of the more difficult jobs I had, & not work wise. Seeing the compensation the execs got, via pay, stocks, & expense reports, was nauseating. Omg, the things that got approved on expense reports!

Oh and let me guess, the amount of your rebate is based on your net worth/net income meaning most of the rebate money would go to billionaires? (I'd like to think I'm joking with that sentence, but I can definitely see Trump wanting to do it that way).

87. Why doesn't he just say that the "tariff revenue" was paid by us Americans

Jul 2025

Every time we buy something that's been imported recently, the price increase we're paying is due to the tariffs.

We're ALL paying more, even those of us on fixed incomes that can't afford it. He's TAKING it from us without our consent, and then giving it back to a few lucky ones.

but some businesses, card companies, lending institutions and probably trumps secret coffers have used to glean proffts from taxes that shouldn't have been pain in the first place.

Great gig! Get extra money from us rubes, invest it for a number of months, collect interest from it then give back a small percentage of the principle telling us he's doing it for us. Illegal? No. Credit card companies do it every day but the gov supposedly isn't legally allowed to do that. Of course, with Don Capone, anything goes so long as he and his ilk can benefit.

My wife's family and her kids are all Trumpsters. When she asked her son why, he said "because we can never get ahead in this economy" and "Trump's gonna fix that, starting with checks for everyone." She asked him a couple weeks ago how that was working out, and he said he "hasn't gotten any government checks yet," but he still thinks they're going to arrive soon.

Rebates for everyone is just another smoke screen to keep the rubes in line.

134. Maddow Blog-Trump's treasury secretary says he sees 'a backdoor for privatizing Social Security'
Thu Jul 31, 2025, 07:47 PM
Jul 2025

“Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent just said the quiet part out loud: The administration is scheming to privatize Social Security,” the DNC said.

Scott Bessent, Trump’s Treasury secretary, said he sees part of the Republicans’ megabill as “a backdoor for privatizing Social Security.”

It was interesting to see Democrats waste no time in offering “five-alarm fire” reactions. www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddo...

Steve Benen (@stevebenen.com) 2025-07-30T20:06:03.549Z

https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/trumps-treasury-secretary-says-sees-backdoor-privatizing-social-securi-rcna222062

When the Republican Party’s domestic policy megabill — the inaptly named One Big Beautiful Bill Act — was still taking shape in May, GOP officials were determined to include a provision about investing $1,000 on behalf of every American baby born over the next four years.....

As Politico reported, the White House Cabinet apparently likes them anyway:

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Wednesday framed the president’s new ‘Trump accounts’ as a transformative tool for long-term wealth building and a ‘backdoor for privatizing Social Security.’ Bessent said the new tax-deferred investment accounts, which were created by President Donald Trump’s sweeping tax law earlier this month, could be a way to boost financial literacy and young voters’ engagement in the economy.

The logic of Bessent’s perspective was difficult to follow. According to his pitch at a Brietbart event in Washington, D.C., the treasury secretary believes young people will be less likely to “want to bring down the system” — and vote for candidates such as Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee in New York City’s mayoral race — if they’re literally invested in the market.

Bessent added, “In a way, it is a backdoor for privatizing Social Security. If, all of a sudden, these accounts grow and you have in the hundreds of thousands of dollars for your retirement, that’s a game-changer, too.”

The Cabinet secretary didn’t elaborate on why, exactly, he thinks this is a “backdoor” for privatizing Social Security, or why the Trump administration sees privatizing Social Security as a worthwhile policy goal — though I'm certainly looking forward to his future comments on the subject. (The accounts included in the megabill won’t have any direct impact on Social Security benefits.)....

Brandon Weathersby, a spokesperson for American Bridge 21st Century, a super PAC aligned with Democratic politics, pushed a similar line: “Republicans think if they make the SSA inoperable by firing critical staffers and make it nearly impossible to get the help you need, they can deem it all beyond repair and privatize the entire program, so their billionaire friends can make a fortune off the backs of some of the most vulnerable Americans. ... Scott Bessent just admitted what Trump and Republicans have been hiding all along: Their plan was never to protect and strengthen Social Security; it was to dismantle it, take benefits away from seniors and the working-class, and turn the program into a cash cow for the ultra-rich.”

I have a hunch the public hasn’t heard the last of Bessent’s quote.
