Canada will recognize Palestinian state in September if certain conditions met

Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada will recognize a Palestinian state in September if the West Bank's governing body meets certain conditions.
The prime minister said the Palestinian Authority must commit to holding an election and other democratic reforms.
Carney's announcement came after he spoke to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas earlier Wednesday and follows similar commitments from other allied countries in the past week.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Tuesday the U.K. will recognize a Palestinian state in September unless Israel agrees to a ceasefire in Gaza, allows the UN to bring in aid and takes other steps toward long-term peace.

To me, and I realize I'm nobody, barring Hamas from any leadership role and releasing the hostages would be non-negotiable.

(8,710 posts)...is only going to be the West Bank? I don't think that's the plan that President Macron put forward; I'm pretty sure he included both the West Bank and Gaza.

(3,639 posts)The Arab nations leaders said this today: https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2025/07/30/middleeast/arab-league-hamas-gaza-israel-intl
They have more of a stake in the events than France does.

I assumed that Carney was joining with Macron.
Then again, based on your comment about Macron, would you agree that Carney isn't in charge either?
I'm in full favor of what the Arab states put out today, because it addresses the I was just wondering why Canada wasn't aligning with that. And for the record, France co-hosted the conference that led to the Arab states' statement today, so while he is not in charge, he is certainly an important element in helping bring this together.
