Hochul vows to explore 'every option' to redraw NY House maps

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) vowed Monday to explore “every option” to redraw the state’s congressional maps in response to Texas’s midcycle redistricting push.

“There’s a phrase, ‘You have to fight fire with fire.’ That is a true statement of how we’re feeling right now,” Hochul told reporters alongside New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D) and several Texas Democrats.

“And as I’ve said, another overused but applicable phrase, ‘All’s fair in love and war.’ That’s why I’m exploring with our leaders every option to redraw our state congressional lines as soon as possible,” she continued, noting state legislative leaders were “on board.”

“We’re already working on a legislative process, reviewing our legal strategies, and we’ll do everything in our power to stop this brazen assault,” she added.

The red states are already so gerrymandered that there really isn't much for them to do other than divide up any blue cities that they concentrated a district into (something TN had done), to blur out any blue.

Meanwhile the blue states put in a significant amount of sweat equity to MAKE "fair maps", where NY's first attempt resulted in (D)s losing a little pile of seats in 2022. The last revision netted a couple back (including the one that Santos was booted from), but I can imagine it will be a chore.

and following rules and processes.

Whereas they have no such compunctions. They know power is its own reward because they're living it.

can do it. So sick of having Republican scum as my House of Representatives member, especially Claudia Tenney.

We learned the HARD WAY here in Pennsylvania - how much is involved in redrawing those gerrymandered district maps. I hope we never have to go through that again in my lifetime. It's a nail-biter, complicated and time-consuming ... and the Repukes know it.

and saw the initial sets of maps. I think there were pretty much 3 - the governor's, a "fair maps" one, and a 3rd party org's map - and the courts ignored all of those and drew their own!!

The 2nd go around after the census, the court drew them again, removing the one seat that we lost (and taking it out of western PA due to a loss of population there) and doing small tweaks to the rest of the districts that were in place from 2018, in order to even out the populations per district.

because that whole arrangement was appealed and appealed, both in the state courts AND the federal ones, where the SCOTUS basically waved it away saying "states decide".
