Trump says he plans to put a 100% tariff on computer chips, likely pushing up cost of electronics

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he will impose a 100% tariff on computer chips, likely raising the cost of electronics, autos, household appliances and other goods deemed essential for the digital age.

“We’ll be putting a tariff on of approximately 100% on chips and semiconductors,” Trump said in the Oval Office while meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook. “But if you’re building in the United States of America, there’s no charge.”

The Republican president said companies that make computer chips in the U.S. would be spared the import tax. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a shortage of computer chips increased the price of autos and contributed to an overall uptick in inflation.

Demand for computer chips has been climbing worldwide, with sales increasing 19.6% in the year-ended in June, according to the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics organization..........................

Intel delays Ohio chip project again to 2031 The project, which was slated to begin operations in 2026,
is underway to meet surging demand for advanced semiconductors.

(Trump stopped it because it was part of Joe Biden’s Chips and science act.)

The $28 billion Ohio One project, which initially broke ground in September 2022, is part of Intel’s long-awaited effort to make the state one of the leading hubs for advanced semiconductor manufacturing.

At the time, the Biden administration touted Intel’s investment as a boon for the U.S. industry following the passage of the CHIPS and Science Act, which has provided billions of dollars in incentives to chipmakers for project funding. However, action on the project has been slow, with multiple delays due in part to changing corporate strategy, market dynamics and limited capital.

Trump does not have the authority to slap tariffs all over everything, and a court case is supposedly out there stating as such. Where the fuck is it?

I believe the court is working on their dcision. The judges sounded sceptical towards the government arguements.

When a decision is rendered it will be appealed by the loosing side.

$5 to $10 billion per plant and usually taking as much as a decade from inception to production.

What makes this even worse is that you need to have specialized equipment to create such a fab, and for the most part the US no longer manufactures that equipment directly, instead preferring to get it from South Korea or China.

This is going to be a stake to the heart of the AI industry.

Construction started under the Biden Chips Act which Trump gutted just because, well Biden did it.

Intel: Ohio plant ‘likely’ canceled if company can’t get new manufacturing customers
NEW ALBANY, Ohio (WCMH) — Intel announced it will need to get external customers for its manufacturing division, or it may need to stop all work in Ohio.

Last week, Intel announced it is further slowing construction at its $28 billion manufacturing site in Licking County. Intel also said if it is unable to find external customers for a new manufacturing technology, it will likely have to stop all work in Ohio. The technology is called 14A and won’t debut until 2027, so Intel will have some time to try and acquire the customers it needs. See previous coverage of Intel’s slowed construction in the video player above.
