WASHINGTON President Donald Trump and the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a peace agreement at the White House on Aug. 8 that ends a decades-long war between the two former Soviet republics and reopens critical transportation access in the region.
During a ceremony in the State Dining Room, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan heaped praise on the two-term Republican president and at one point said Trump deserved the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.
Their joint declaration establishes a "Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity," a 20-mile multi-modal transit corridor through the South Caucasus connecting the two countries. The United States will have exclusive development rights along it.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have been at odds since the late 1980s when Nagorno-Karabakh ‒ an Azerbaijani region that had a mostly ethnic-Armenian population ‒ broke away from Azerbaijan with support from Armenia.

(28,507 posts)Was this a hot war with military incursions into opposition territories or was this 2 countries who just didnt get along well?
I cant imagine Trump did anything more than get two leaders to formally agree to get along and carve out a new grift for himself.

(12,774 posts)Although no precise casualty figures exist, between 1994 and 2009, as many as 3,000 people, mostly soldiers, had been killed, according to most observers.
The Second Nagorno-Karabakh War occurred between 27 September and 10 November 2020. According to Azerbaijan, the fighting left 2,906 Azerbaijani soldiers and 100 civilians dead, while six servicemen were still missing. Armenian authorities stated the fighting had left 3,825 Armenian soldiers and 85 civilians dead, while 187 servicemen and 21 civilians were still missing.

(1,983 posts)when talking about it, no one will actually call it the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity. The "Trump" part will quickly fall off and it will become the RIPP to the common folk. Before long, it might even be called the RIPP-off.

(5,255 posts)Without security, its useless. Which means we are going to have to put a brigade or two into that twenty-mike stretch, and be ready to defend it against raiders.
For eternity.
Im not happy with the USA being in the middle.

(34,852 posts)Prime Minister is a sell out!
He also will close the southern border of Armenia with Iran. (Iran is Armenia's largest trading partner) Armenia only has two trading partners: Russia and Iran. That's it!
Oil will flow from the Caspian through Azerbaijan and through Turkey with this deal. It's just going to make Turkey and Azerbaijan wealthier and will kill the Armenians.
It will make them more dependent on Russia.
Trump hates Christians!!!!!
