Sen. Susan Collins drowned out by protesters at Maine ribbon-cutting event

Source: NBC News

Aug. 27, 2025, 12:47 PM EDT / Updated Aug. 27, 2025, 1:32 PM EDT

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, was heckled and drowned out at times by demonstrators at a ribbon-cutting ceremony in her home state Tuesday, the latest in a series of confrontations between protesters and members of Congress.

"Shame! Shame! Shame!" protesters yelled at Collins as she cut the ribbon to mark the completion of long-running Route 1 construction project in Searsport. The demonstrators were yelling about cuts to Medicare, Israeli attacks on Gaza and Trump's nominees on the Supreme Court, video of the event shows.

"Could you please just listen, for just one..." Collins said at one point, before she was again interrupted. "We'd like you to listen!" one of the demonstrators yelled, while another chastised Collins for not holding any town halls with constituents.

At another point, Collins, said, "I have a suggestion. Would you listen to the suggestion?" "Vote Graham Platner!" one of the protesters offered, referring to a Democrat running for Collins' seat. Collins tried reasoning with the crowd, asking them to let her “get through this brief ceremony,” before being interrupted again.

she strikes me as the most cynical of them all. I do not understand why anyone would ever accept a word from her in good faith; she's at the end of the day a republican and that's all she ever will be. even when she votes the right way, it's only because she knows it won't fuck up the vote for the republicans. she doesn't have any values beyond being a republican.

i don't much care for her in other words.

Full disclosure: This is a shallow, shallow comment. But this woman drives me freaking nuts because she does "baby talk" when she speaks. She talks like a two year old. I certainly have no respect for her as a Senator based on her voting record. But just watching her is simply painful.

Speak up! Stand up straight! Act right!!!

But seriously - why does she shake her head every time that she starts to speak? Is it some medical condition by chance? Has anyone else noticed this?

I guess Collins can't help the voice thing either. I should be more forgiving.

She can help being an asshole Republican, though.

Thanks for the information.

If she had had it brought to her attention (since one cannot hear one's own voice, it kind of requires someone to point it out) and decided to work on it in, say, her thirties, she might have been able to adjust. But it's kind of late now.

Back in the day that was fashionable. If you ever listen to some old-time radio comedy shows in particular, it will leap out at you. Gracie Allen is just one example.

Watching that video, it's clear to me that the shaking is a tremor rather than a "No" head shake.

The woman really needs to retire. Not just because she's annoying, but because she really doesn't seem to be up to the challenges of the job at this point (if she ever was). I'd say that regardless of Collins's gender or political affiliation. I hope the Democrat who runs against her is successful, for more reasons than one.

Take Josh Hawley whose comedy never quits. Hawley like Collin’s covers his ass with occasional well planned concern. Complete and total concern fakes.

Why do they keep voting for this loser? One of the few GOP senators from the Northeast. Does she bring home the bacon (pork)? I would think a level headed Democrat could also bring it home too.

If the roles were reversed and she was a D, I'd feel embarassed voting for her. I'd write someone in.

and what will be the last generation of lobster fishers as the bugs haul ass for cooler Canadian waters. The lobster wars are getting closer to gunfire. Both the Maine and Canada are cutting each others trap loose, or taking lobsters, at $200 a trap.

The Maine is losing this war over claiming rights to disputed lobster grounds, the gray zone, and I believe the Maine lobstermen feel a right wing die hard like Collins can help. She has actually exacerbated the Maine problem for after 30 years of yeas votes on drilling, fracking, and loosening of fishing regulations.

James Atchison wrote a book called The Lobster Gangs of Maine half a century ago about it. He was one of my favorite professors at UMaine. I'm hopeful that the new candidate whose name I forget will be a strong challenger to Collins.

Over the years I've watched her appear to agonize over her votes and make it look like she really is not OK with what she's voting on. In reality this agonizing is just a show for the camera. We need to be on the lookout for people like her.

Collins, a moderate Republican and sometime Trump critic, …

Seriously, NBC?

Demonstrators seem to be part of the political world nowadays,” Collins said. “It was interesting to see how much misinformation they had.

The only “misinformation” is the garbage the Republican projectionists spew. Everything they say Dems are doing is what they are doing.
