Record numbers of Americans have applied for UK citizenship because of London's values, says Khan

The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has said a record number of Americans have applied for British citizenship following the election of Donald Trump, which he attributed to the city’s “liberal values”.

In an opening salvo ahead of the US president’s state visit, Sadiq Khan said he wanted to challenge the idea that London was in turmoil and said that more Americans than ever were seeking to make it their home.

He said liberal Americans identified with London because of the city’s “fundamental values, like adhering to the rule of law, being proud of our diversity and championing the rights of minority communities”.

New figures from the Home Office show a rise of 50% in citizenship applications from Americans – putting it at the highest since records began. Between April-June, there were a record 2,194 applications, compared to 1,465 the previous year.

"Americans would be way better off" is a blanket statement you can't justify. For instance, most Americans aren't fluent in German. This affects your quality of life, employment opportunities and so on. Then you have personal connections, which could go either way.

However I've travelled in Germany many times over the past 30 years, and I know that most native Germans are fluent in English. Also many Germans speak French or Italian, or another language in addition to English. It's the German dialects that are difficult for travelers to pick-up quickly.

7. I'd love to live in the West Midlands

which borders at its west with northern Wales. It's where my ancestry began.

I have an expat friend in Stourport-on-Severn, which seems an idyllic little town (it has a stone arch bridge that's gotta be hundreds of years old), not far from Birmingham. Her back yard is right on the Severn River.

But then, if I could relicate to a country of my choice, it'd be New Zealand -- perhaps the most liberal country in the world, and it has footy. The only thing is, it isn't very large -- it'd easily fit inside California
( and has one-eighth the population), and it's some 800 miles to the east coast of Australia, so I might freel a bit sea-locked.

The UK does have "British Citizenship by (double) descent" meaning a grandparent. However, I think the grandparent must have served in the Crown Service (i.e., British Military, Overseas Civil Service, Colonial Service, Diplomatic Corp, etc.)
