Chicago Schools Issue 'Safety Alert' After New ICE Activity

A Chicago school district has issued a safety alert to families and community members in response to recent immigration enforcement activity in the area.

North Chicago School District 187 Superintendent John Price sent the alert Thursday afternoon after the district received confirmation of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol operations in North Chicago and nearby Waukegan, according to the alert.

“The safety and well-being of our students, families, and community are our highest priority,” Price wrote in the alert, which was also shared by the North Chicago Police Department on Facebook.

Newsweek reached out to the school district for comment via email outside office hours.

The Great Lakes Naval Base is in North Chicago. The town is 36 percent Hispanic.

It is a town about 40 miles north of Chicago.

Ironically, we went over all this before since the naval base where they were going to stage these ICE and Nat'l Guard ops is in North Chicago.

There are no school districts or superintendents in Chicago.

It has its own Superintendent and its own Board of Education, whose Rules and Regulations have the same legal power as city ordinances. District 299 is not controlled by the Illinois Board of Education or the Illinois legislature.
