Trump says it is time to get rid of US Senate's filibuster custom
Source: Reuters
Republican U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday it is time to get rid of the Senate's filibuster custom to bypass a Democratic roadblock during the ongoing government shutdown.
The "filibuster" is the Senate rule that requires 60 of the chamber's 100 members to agree to pass most legislation. Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate and a 219-213 majority in the House of Representatives.
"It is now time for the Republicans to play their "TRUMP CARD," and go for what is called the Nuclear Option Get rid of the Filibuster, and get rid of it, NOW," Trump wrote on social media.
The partial shutdown was in its 30th day on Thursday with no end in sight.

(2,793 posts)I do NOT understand how anybody on this forum, for example, can be in favor of abolishing something that provides checks and balances against tyranny.
We would not have any of the programs we have come to rely on if the GOP got to ram through every piece of bullshit legislation by a simple majority.

The Senate was designed to be a deliberate body where robust debate and bipartisan compromise were the goals.

(13,091 posts)that change in Senate rules will continue to apply when they no longer have the majority. The Republicans will eventually lose their already razor-thin majority. Change is the only constant.

(2,025 posts)It was used by southern senators to kill anti lynching bills and civil rights legislation. Ironically now its going to be used to turn back the clock for pretty much all of us.
It was bound to get killed at some point and given that the GOP no longer cares for traditions (even those as ridiculous as the filibuster), theres a good chance theyll go through with it.

(17,580 posts)Senate Rs do not want to eliminate the legislative fillibuster because then they 100% OWN the consquences of all the bad things that are and will happen once the Senate Rs vote to pass the House;s bill and reopen the government.
When Rs are in the Senate minority, they won't be able to impose the tyranny of the minority to stop progress on making America a better, fairer, more equal country. And they know it.
