Insiders say Trump dumbfounded that Dems haven't caved on shutdown -- and he's seething

Source: Raw Story

November 1, 2025 7:50AM ET

The White House confidently predicted a swift resolution to the government shutdown as it started last month — with White House officials believing Democrats would quickly capitulate. The fact that it's still going has left President Donald Trump dumbfounded — and furious, insiders told Politico.

As the shutdown enters its second month, the administration's miscalculation has become increasingly apparent, the report stated. "Trump, he's had it with these people, because he knows they're playing politics," said an anonymous White House source. "Nobody thought it was going to last this long."

Trump's frustration boiled over on Thursday when he dramatically called for Republicans to "INITIATE THE NUCLEAR OPTION" and abolish the filibuster to end the shutdown. In a scathing critique of Democrats, he told reporters, "The Democrats just don't know what they're doing. I don't know what's wrong with them. They've become crazed lunatics." "It's their fault. Everything is their fault. It's so easily solved," Trump continued, insisting he would not meet with Democratic leadership until the government reopens.

White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson doubled down, claiming "Democrats won't do what's best for the American people, the nuclear option will need to be invoked." However, a person close to Trump acknowledged that while the president is serious about eliminating the filibuster, he "knows it's not going to happen." Republicans quickly distanced themselves from Trump's suggestion, with Majority Leader John Thune's office maintaining that his "position on the importance of the legislative filibuster is unchanged."

Here are the options:

1. Democrats cave - ACA and SNAP die. Lower income voters are outraged, including many MAGA-types when their kids don't eat.
2. Republicans kill filibuster - Same result, and Democrats have a tool to use later on whenever they take the Senate. I have no faith that any negotiations would happen under this scenario.
3. Democrats hold fast - ACA and SNAP put on hold. Lower income voters are outraged, and Democrats hold the high ground due to Mikey J. not opening the House. They just have to stay on-message and get the word out.
4. Republicans cave - Negotiations can begin on ACA and SNAP, but there will be another Epstein vote with 218 voting yes in the House.

It's typical Scrooge (R's) vs. Tiny Tim (D's), but I don't think Scrooge will be buying any turkey for the Cratchits this year.

when negotiating because any resolution will require Republican concession and make them look weak.

They are happy to nuke the filibuster on non-legislative things like confirming right-wing judges because the extra 10 votes means they would have to accept (legally) centrist judges.

But more time than not, they are trying to kill legislation than create it, so they want to keep the filibuster in place for that.

It is time to blow the Jim Crow filibuster away 100% forever.

If the Rs vote against it or don't let it get to a floor vote, then Dems can correctly point out that Rs don't want to end the shutdown because Rs voted down a way to get everything they want.

Should have shut it down before instead of helping pass the big shitty bill. That might have given Marge some time to find out what the hell she was voting into law.
